I weigh around 200lbs, the most i've ever benched is 257lbs for a single.

I can't do it, but I've only been working out for about 6 weeks.
I've got friends who aren't even what I'd consider heavy workout guys (they stay fit though and lift occasionally) that can do a little over their BW.
First time lifter's probably won't be able to, but like others mentioned, it shouldn't take long.
I am hopeful that by the end of april or may I'll be able to press a little over my BW.

dode i bench 295 when i was 14. i only weighed 193. i'd b well past three hundred by now if i hadnt screwed up my rotator and been out since last june.

the only people i know that cant bench their own weight are noobs at the gym, but it isnt that way for long. once you get the stabiliser muscles built up, you get up to your body weight quickly.
btw im 153lbs and rep 230 on my last set- Uli

Almost anybody who has been lifting for a few months should be able to bench their body weight. Doubling your body weight should be the real goal, for long term.
