    Spirulina - protein source

I take Spirulina everyday and I just read it is 50-70% protein in its dry weight form. And also it is a complete protein source..so would this count into muscle building protein intake?? theres no nutrition value on the stuff I have.

    Is it a complete protein?

I would count it as protein if I took it, but I would never take it because it's a scam supplement really. It's also cultivated from feces.

It's really just a supplement health market scam (there are many!). Of course, there are also claims that shark cartilage is great for you too.

Also, I believe it is cultivated from feces where it is found in most abundance. This is what I recall from a biology lecture...

Notice the extensive references are merely other articles. A strong lack of controlled, scientific, peer-reviewed literature should be a huge red flag.

Ya true ...weird .. I dont see how hard it would be to prove or not prove whats in something like all the vitamins an minerals it claims to have 4 servings of veggies in a 5g serving. Also You'd have to take WAY to much to make it a decent source for protein.

The way I see it is protein is protein, it's getting broken down into the same amino acids as something else. Really doubt that spirulina is the secret to life, although I'm not even skeptical because it's widely accepted that spirulina does not have the touted effects.

I take 3 grams a day, which the label says is only 2 grams of protein. (Roughly 50-70%)

Ya I looked it up then weighed it on my scale and turns out to be not very much protein at all. But other then that seems like its very beneficial for my health.

taste so gross tho, tried puttin it in a shake and it ruins it so i just put it in water an chug it an chase with milk.

Its no secret and its also no scam. It isn't grown in feces (though I'm sure it WILL grow in feces or any other over nutriefied water). I is a FOOD. It just so happens that it is extreamly concentrated (vitamin and mineral rich) and easy to digest, so some people call it a super food. It isn't magic- nor is it a scam, its good for you in the same way that spinach is, only more concentrated. If it works for you then awesome, if not then don't take it. I have taken it for months and months (I put mine in OJ and chug it) and I honestly didn't notice any effect but then again I don't notice an effect when I eat spinach or whatev either.

Who said fish oil was a scam? As far as multivitamins being a scam, well, the research isn't looking good so lol I dont know what your argument is.

Been taking spirulina capsules/tablets for about a month now, and have never felt more energized or better in all my life. I tossed my bulk multivitamins because the spirulina makes me feel as good as the vitamins should have been doing. While it certainly isn't a cure all like many of the sensationalist websites claim, I don't think it's a scam either. Just a very very healthy food thanks to insanely high chlorophyll levels.

I ordered some powder and plan on mixing it with banana, apple juice, ground flaxseed, and lecithin for a breakfast shake.

Spirulina is very alkaline also, which would make it a great choice for a bodybuilder since many of our protein sources are quite acidic (no so good).

Well rub, I don't have any scientific evidence, but my gf definitely believes it helps me with cardio.

taking a combine of zinc, massive amount of soy lecithin (10g), and spirulina enables me to leave her worn out in a pool of her own sweat in bed.

In answer to your question DFA, I don't think spirulina can count as a good source of protein unless you are taking 60 grams a day! Not that there's anything wrong with that, unless you are worried about too much vitamin A or rapid detoxification (ie, ****ting your guts out lol).

This is not a personal attack on you, but what you are posting is complete misinformation & it's sad because some people might take it seriously & avoid taking Spirulina which in reality is a single celled vegetable.

Do yourself a favor & read real information about Spirulina at the link below.

The company referenced above is a respected publicly traded organization. I take Spirulina everyday, and I'm sick of people who know NOTHING about it giving commentary on it.

Once more, Spirulina in a species of micro-algae. Guys...it's a ****ing plant. It grows in water, and concentrates nutrients like no other plant on the planet earth can. It is a food.

It is a great protein source. I use about 20 to 30 grams daily & about 10 to 15 grams of Chlorella daily. These two algae should be a staple of the diet. The benefits I've seen from them are on par if not better than fish oil & everybody around here swears by fish oil.

Thing is, this supp is not widely used just yet, but that is changing as people relaize how important it is to support your body with alkaline plant proteins.

While it appears to be cultivated from other sources such as ponds, a professor I had in college mentioned spirulina and said its also gotten from feces. By no means am I trying to appear as an authority on the subject, but just because a successful company markets something doesn't mean all it's products are good. I'm sure some people get legitimate benefits from spirulina, but Im not convinced that its worth it. Again, Im not an authority on spirulina, but that's my take on it.

Since I made the switch from the Swanson brand Spirulina and Chlorella tablets to Cyanotech/Nutrex Spirulina powder and Jarrow Chlorella powder, I am never looking back.

Seriously, I cannot live without this stuff now. I take 1.5 teaspoons spirulina in my apple juice/banana/blueberry/soy lecithin shake in the morning, and 1.5 teaspoons chlorella in my protein shake at night.

Also, taking some spirulina an hour before working out or sex greatly enhances my endurance. These two supplements are my staples now, hell I'd give up whey before I give up this combine of algaes.

The only thing I don't like is that I get horrid ****s in the morning from chlorella, but I'm sure that will pass.

Vegeta, how long did it take you to build up to the amount you are taking now?

Well...been taking it regularly since mid November I think, and I started taking 30/15 (a good rule of thumb is to take S to C in a 2 to 1 ratio) in Jnauary. This is a staple of my routine, and the exciting part is that people who have taken it for years say you continue to see real benefits through the 1st year of using it regularly.

You're right about the ****s...they reek! I take 36 500mg Spirulina Tabs & 30 200mg chlorella tabs a day, and I have one shake before my workout which consists of 4/5 tsp of Chlorella powder & 3 tsp of Spirulina powder.

Simply awesome stuff. You would also love Bio-Astin which is a product that CYAN makes. Check it out.
