Coffee and Calcium Supplements...

I've read that coffee interferes with calcium absorpition. If it's true, would taking calcium supplements (Natural calcium, magnesium, and zinc) after breakfast/before morning coffee be a bad idea?

For best absorption I would take it before breakfast, but as long as you take it before drinking coffee you should be all set.

If you take calcium, it should be taken with food or it can cause stomach cramps.

That is correct - the oxalic acid in the coffee (and a whole host of other foods) binds with minerals like calcium, iron, sodium, magnesium, potassium, and produces insoluable salts that cannot be absorbed.

If you can take in smaller doses spread throughout the day, you'll get the most out of your supplementation.

You might want to take your Zinc seperate from Calcium. Calcium blocks off zinc absorption to a certain extent.

A small amount of caffein, before training, can be beneficial. It can increase calcium ions inside the muscle, helping to increase muscle strength. However taking calcium at the same time as caffein, will cancell the calcium out. Other things that can destroy calcium if consumed at the same time are phosphorus, sodium & white flour.

The 3 most important minerals are calcium, iron & zinc. These minerals all compete for absorbsion. When or if, you take all these minerals at the same time, the body will prioritize calcium over the other two minerals. This means that the iron & zinc will be poorly asorbed, if at all.

What I do to make sure that iron can be asorbed to the max, is have a non-calcium, high iron meal. I will have red meat & dessicated liver tablets, along with fruit juice, which the sugar helps the uptake of iron. I will also consume 500mg of vitamin c & 2mg of copper, to aid in the asorbation even more.

As for zinc. I take my zma cocktail at night on a empty stomache, along with 250mg of vitamin c, to help with the asorbtion. Beware thou, when zinc intake is high, copper can quickly become depleated.
