Sorry its your form. ATG or even below parallel = no knee pain. Do yourself a favor and stretch every single muscle below your chin, every day. Allow yourself to be flexible and the squat will become your favorite exercise. Practice potato-sack squats (look it up) and focus on sitting back into the position, instead of breaking at the knees (which is what your doing). Hope that helps.

squats work so many different muscles, it really depends what PART of squats you want to replace IMO. leg presses can do a decent job on quads and glutes, hyperextensions on lower back, and ab stuff on the rest of the core. but the main problem with trying to replace a squat is it is very hard to find a single exercise that is going to be able to work all those muscle groups at once, and as hard. are front squats any easier on your knees? or hack squats?

Rath, i coouldnt find potato-sack squats.

Brute, all types of squats hurt.

Some more info, i just have bad knees overall. Whenever I run they hurt, stretch, bend over, Lunge, so its not just squats that hurt them

Experiment with different machines (hack squat, leg press, free squat, smith). Sorry to say, but from what you're describing heavy leg work may not be the best thing for you.

If it indeed hurts that bad, just experiment with other leg exercises. Find one or several that don't hurt your knees.

if you really wanna replace it, leg press + straight leg deadlift. Try lowering the weight and really focusing on form for squats, dont feel embarassed to ask for people to check your form.

There is no replacement for squats AT ALL.

With that said, we must assume your form is jacked.

If you say your form is good, post a video for us to check.

I played soccer, street ball and did gymnastics for a short time and my knees are pretty fuxored, but I can squat just fine. I actually have less knee issues these days.

There's nothing wrong with squatting when you're 13, I know I did when I was that young! The only problem that I remember is that my knee's hurt all the time from huge growth spurts and general sports injury's! (I was also 6' at 13! )

Don't mistake growth pain with squatting pain. If you do you'll try to avoid squatting, and then you'll be wondering why you have chicken legs! Squats are my favorite exercise of all, and they have been for a long time because I know that they are great for your knees! Make sure you're going nice and deep, it'll strengthen everything around your knees! And stay away from the leg extensions, as they are proven to put more pressure on your knees than squatting!
