If this were true, the inverse would apply as well. We would raise our metabolism by exercising for a few months and then forget about exercising forever because our permanently increased metabolism would make us a fat burning machine.
I'm kind of busy right now, but check out www.pubmed.com for studies. It's a known fact that people's metabolisms slow with time naturally, dieting or not dieting, but if you do diet, the body adapts quicker to this process of expending less calories. Exercise technically slows down metabolism, but it doesn't appear that way since your body burns calories during that activity so the net result is positive.

I'm to busy to search the site for what I know is not true...aside from fact that metabolism slows down as we age, dieting does not permanently lower metabolism and excercise does not permanently raise metabolism.

You stated "excercise does not permanently raise metabolism" you're right, and I said it lowered metabolism, so why did you need to reaffirm my statement?

You missed one key word, I said permanent.

The studies, and I honestly didn't read them all but skimmed a few quickly, did not indicate what the patients were eating. But there is a difference between a sub-1000 calorie a day fast with protein, and another with carbohydrates. A sharp medical student can find these studies as well

No, there's honestly no difference. It's the act of catabolic weight loss that does it as well as a lowered leptin level.

Catabolic weight loss and a lowered leptin level permanently lowers metabolism? I honestly did not know that.

Are you a medical student or a chemistry student or neither?

Since july 2008 i have been doing the 1000 calorie diet, haven't exercised much besides doing lots of walking and i have lost 98lbs. That's just in 5 and a bit months. But my trick is cutting out bread, pasta and rice too and watching carbs.

Good luck dealing with being skinny fat if or when it happens to you.

I'd be willing to say that 95% of people on this forum accomplish nothing in years, don't be one of those people. It's sad, they seem to have the knowledge many don't but can't utilize it.

I got pretty fat by drinking too much my junior year abroad. I cut my calories to 1000-1200 for 6 months and did 60+ minutes of cardio daily. It was "successful" in that I lost a lot of scale weight, quickly (about 30 pounds in 6 months). I wouldn't do this again knowing what I know today, because looking back I realize I must have lost a lot of lean mass along with the fat.

    Same as me

I wanted to lose weight my whole life. I had never been fat but I was chubby, eating Nutella everyday, abusing of bread toast etc.... The thing is I tried this 1000 cal diet and succeeded for 2 weeks. Yeah ik its not long but still i lost 12 lbs in 2 weeks. I went to the gym 5 times a week and ran for 30 mins in an extreme way. Id end up sweating like if it rained over me. The days passed by and wanting to see earlier results, I cut more and more the calories from 1000 to 800 then 700 and it wasn't really a prob for me bc i also didn't have any appetite like before. Then 2 weeks later I had a bday party of a friend, and that day was my ´´cheat day´´ . I got the half of a piece of cake and then just wanted more and more. I ended up binging that day. The days passed on and i had so much stress in my life. I binged EVERYDAY only on bad food. I could eat a whole chocolate alone, the milk bing ones. It was terrible. I felt so bad about myself. I would sometimes try put my finger on my throat to vomit it all out but no i stopped. I didn't want to become bulimic. I didn't want to hurt my body like that.
I binged for 4 Months straight. My addiction to food was extreme. I gained from 53 kg to 62 kg in only 4 months. I feel like ****. 3 days ago I started dieting again, 1000 cals I just wanna be skinny as hell I hope my binging doesn't come again bc it was so hard for me to battle with binge eating disorder

People, it's not that difficult. Eat whole foods such chicken breast, fish, turkey, broccoli, brown rice, sweet potatoes at caloric deficit from your TDEE (daily needs) and the weight comes off. Protein makes you feel full along with drinking lots of water. Quite being so weak minded about this. Just do it already. Read the Nutrition stickies...PLEASE!

"Live your life so the fear of death never enters your heart. When it comes your time to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with the fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song and die like a hero going home.” -Tecumseh

I can contribute some personal stats. 800 cal/day with ~40% protein, 20% carbs. No strength training because I'm injured.

    Start 22/11/2015: 190 lbs @ 28.9% BF (i.e. Fat= 54.9 lbs, LBM = 135.1 lbs)
    End 05/01/2016: 165 lbs @ 24.9% BF (i.e. Fat= 41.1 lbs, LBM= 123.9 lbs)

So over 6.5 weeks, I've lost 25 lbs (13.8 lbs of fat and 11.2 lbs of LBM) - that's 55% fat and 45% LBM.

Please don't extrapolate this to your own personal circumstance, but losing 45% LBM is pretty crap.
