What is that back exercise called that...
It is that one the pros do all the time where you only put weight on half a bar and you a V handle to pull it. I can't for the life of me remember what the heck they are called. Also, what the hell is the advantage of doing them? I see people doing them at the gym (mimicing the pros... poor forma and all) and I cannot see how it could work the back at all.

Huh... I always used to call chest supported rows t-bar rows. Does it do anything the way most dousches (and pros) do it?
How does it compare to other rows? I actually might do these tomorrow, I could prolly throw hella weight on there...

It's just a different exercise, I wouldn't say it's better or worse. A lot of guys here swear by them and I rate them highly too.
To me rowing a barbell with the V-shaped chinning handle feels similar to seated rows with the same attachment only you're not seated so if you run out of weight on those, doing them with a barbell might be the next step. By tucking the elbows in you'll feel it a lot in the lats.

How upright should one be when doing these? I am just going on the assumption that most of the people who do these at my gym are doing them wrong.

It depends. You'll see the same thing with barbell rows where some do them almost upright aka "Yates rows," some do them around 45°, and some do them fully bent-over.
I've always done T-bar rows with my back close to horizontal and a slightly wider stance that feels stable when I'm using heavy weights. Like I said, they were like a seated row substitute for me. Find a stance and angle that is comfortable. If you're feeling it in the right places, chances are you're doing them right.

Is that how it is with bent over rows too? If your elbows are tucked in, it works your lats more, but if they are out it works your mid back more?

If you want to emphasize lat involvement, tuck them elbows in and row toward the abs/waist. Some will say they feel the underhand grip version more in the lats but that's because it forces the elbows in, no other reason.
By bringing the elbows out and using a wider grip rowing toward the chest, I find you can get a much stronger contraction of the shoulder blades (scapular retraction). This is what builds up and thickens the middle of the back. I find weighted chins (several variations) do an excellent job of targeting my lats so rather than trying to compromise anywhere, I use rows to target the middle of the back almost exclusively. I do them fully bent-over rowing toward the chest. I've tried everything else and this is what works best for me.

Trust me, most people in the gym are doing them wrong. Completely and utterly wrong.
Bend over about 45 degrees or so. The key to doing them properly is to acheive full range of motion. You can't do that by loading 2 or 3 45lb plates on on end of the bar and shrugging the weight up and down a few inches. I've seen this crap so many times.
You should use 10 or 20lb plates as this will allow better ROM. You need to fully stretch out and then retract the scapula (shoulder blades) in order to use the muscles properly.
Please, please don't use momentum. Contract your back muscles hard to get the weight up, don't just throw it up.
Good luck!
