Long or short hair on men? I'm not talking mullets, not talking greasy, crappy unwashed, stringy, bleached straggly crap here, I'm talking about hair on a man that is well kept and looks as good or almost as good as the nicest looking hair on a woman.
I have nice, healthy brown shoulder length hair, I keep it trimmed, and it is undercut on the sides and back. My gf loves it, but she moved away and her opinion was one of the main arguments for keeping it, so I am thinking about getting rid of it. But at the same time, I feel like I am lucky to be able to have nice hair.
One thing I have noticed from reading online is that there are more women who stereotype and HATE long hair than short hair. IOW, women who like it long also tend to appreciate short, but not always vice versa.

My guy's hair sounds about like yours... below shoulder length, trimmed underneath. It's black and very healthy... naturally curly, but sometimes he straightens it. He wears it in a ponytail when the occasion calls for a little restraint. It fits his personality - he's a drummer. I've been surprised at the older women that admire it and want to run their fingers through it. LOL

it depends on your personality, mostly, and how you feel about it. usually if guys like their hair and are comfortable with the way it looks, girls will think it's cool.
in highschool I knew a guy with long hair (midback. he was in martial arts.) but it was really dried and frizzy. not attractive hair at all. I've known this other guy for a few years and he has long hair as well (what do you know, he's in martial arts too!), but his hair is very well-kept and healthy. his hair looks great, whereas the other guy I knew would look so much better with short hair because he didn't take care of his hair. it does sound like you take care of your hair, so it seems like it probably looks good and suits you. besides, if you like it and your girlfriend likes it, why does anyone else matter?

long hair is the ****.
I'm growing mine out now...
but yea, my natural hair is pretty bleached and straggly... (it's a sun-in esque color, but with no sun-in... sad... im gonna have to dye it...)
how the hell do I get girl hair? I want it...

It really depends on the guy - some can pull off the long hair look quite nicely. I've know a few guys that looked great with long hair.
However, short hair is a really big attraction for me on a guy. Super short, military short - I don't know what it is about it for sure but I like it. A few guys I know that are self conscious about some balding have pretty much shaved their heads and many of them look pretty great that way, it's a nice look.
Good luck with your decision! My Journal

Since I'm a hair stylist here is my opinion. If you have nice hair and your are keeping it well groomed then don't cut it. Men have a hard time growing out their hair. It gets big and round before it gets long. So you are already there and why cut it?? I don't want to be rude but if it's thinning, then men with thinnging hair should keep it shorter. It is more flattering and looks fuller, and it doesn't look like they are trying too hard. And one more thing ... sorry to ramble... but, men with grey or greying hair should not color it. I think it makes them more distinguished (spell?). Well thats my two cents for today!

I dislike long hair on men, but I am not going to click your poll, because the wording is far too strongly negative and purposely slanted.
First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out -because I was not a Socialist.
Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out -because I was not a Trade Unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out -because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me - and there was no one left to speak for me.

I think it's unattractive. Like I think that except in the very rarest of circumstances, women look masculine in short hair. I think men look feminine (or just plain unkept) in long hair. There are rare circumstances where that's not the case, too. Like Fabio doesn't look horrible in long hair, but most men do.
I am a woman, and I have hair to my waist. I feel it's feminine, and I'm not remotely ashamed to be a woman. Yes, I have certain views of what's feminine and what's masculine, but it goes well beyond that. Short hair on men makes them look "groomed" while long hair inevitably makes them look "disheveled."
I think that people should express themselves as they see fit, however. If a woman wears short hair, then I confess that it expresses, TO ME, that she's less feminine. If a man chooses to express himself with long hair, what his choice expresses to me is a lack of grooming. That is, however, simply my perception. But it's a very real one to me.
However, that doesn't go anywhere near the perception that he's a "bum" or that the woman with short hair is "a bull." So the comment seems excessive to me.

Amris: Ok, so I authored the poll choices, but you know enough about my intent to consider them negative? Negativity is a matter of intent. I was joking, playing up the stereotypes a lot of people have toward hair (artsy, rocker, fabio, etc) for comedic effect. Gads stop nitpicking, clicking a checkbox isn't signing a contract.
And I understand what you're saying about masculine/feminine, I am not attracted to short haired women very often. Your feedback is useful, I'd been wondering whether I looked "rag tag" with my hair down. And with it pulled back, let's just say that the other day I got approached by a Roman with a strong accent who wanted to sell me Italian clothing.
Convo between me and gf last year:
Her: Stop gelling your hair, you look like a guido
Me: I *am* a guido
Her: Well you don't have to gel it, it looks fine dry

I have done many haircuts and disagree when it comes to femininity. This is my opinoin of course. I have a client who decided to grow out her hair from shaved to a bob, and I think( and so did alot of other people )she looked more beautiful with no hair. She is drop dead gorgeous! It is how you carry yourself, dress, if you wear makeup etc... How long your hair is doesn't determine if your more feminine or not, or masculine for that matter. It is how you feel . I've seen women with hair down to their butts and walked and carried themselves very masculine. Yes, I feel better with longer hair, but that is my own insecurities, I have had all lengths of hair and didn't feel less feminine. Do whatever makes you feel the best.

I personally do not like really short or shaved hair I've almost never seen a guy that I thought was atractive with real short hair... there are exceptions of course...
usually I don't care for real long hair on guys either, it all depends on face shape, if it looks good on you keep it, if it's just nice hair but doesn't look good with your face shape then I'd say ditch it
ps. it's funny that on these forums most women seem to like real short hair, all the girls I know prefer longish mid length hair...

i am impartial. it all depends on the guy. some guys just dont look good with long hair. i had a boyfriend with long black hair, very good hair. my husband however, has short blonde hair. if a girl falls in love with a guy, the hair wont matter too much. and if it does, they can deal with it later in the relationship.

but to be honest, WHAT does it really matter to the thread originator?? EVERY women is different. you are NOT going to please them ALL, nor, be

As long as it's kept nicely, doesn't matter if it's long or short in my opinion. I just don't like men without hair.

I thought I would come back to this thread because I saw a couple of guys the past few days and couldn't help thinking how unbelievably attractive I would find them with much shorter hair. Short hair seems to be a big factor for me in attraction, although I do agree that if I met the right person it wouldn't really matter to me, as long as he took reasonable care of himself.

I'm trying to find some examples of "short hair" but am having a hard time finding photos. Basically pretty trim, like a military cut. It also depends on the guy and his features, too. As much as short hair seems appealing to me, I'll admit that it doesn't look right on some people. There was a guy I knew from high school that had long hair - jet black and well maintained - and he looked great. Then I had a friend that didn't like the fact he was balding so he just about shaved his head, like super short, and it looked fantastic!
A few of my boyfriends let me cut their hair and I would usually cut it as short as they would let me.
Not sure that I actually elaborated here....sorry.My Journal

I have been at both sides of the spectrum. My hair was never considered 'long'. I had a full head of hair as a teenager, and kept it combed, most times with hair gel (the general nerd appearance). I was always known as the kid who played the piano and kept a perfect hairstyle. I eventually got tired of it not too long after I got married, and cut it down to a military-style haircut. I've kept it like this for a few years, cutting it myself once a week. Then recently (a couple of weeks ago), I got off work (nightshift) and went home to get ready for school, including cutting my hair. I was really tired, and really messed things up. So I buzzed it off. I thought that looked stupid, so then I shaved it. About the same time, I was growing a gotee, so my look really changed in literally a few minutes. I now still have it shaved, and still have the gotee, and I think I like that look for myself. It is a little more trouble having to shave it everyday, but I like it enough to do that. If I can dig up some pics, maybe I can show the progression and get some opinions. Right now, most of my classmates love the new look. Wife still isn't sure, but she'll come around I'm sure.

I do. IMO I haven't seen one woman who looked good with shorter hair. Long hair I do like. I have long hair, though. Why? Because it suits ME. I definitely get more female attention (from hot women too) with long hair. It seemed that when I had it short (like a military cut and almost shaved) women just turned away from me and didn't want to look at me. Long hair works for me. Not for alot of guys but for me it does. Maybe some people think it looks feminine but most women I've met thought I looked good with it. That's why I keep it. Sure alot of women love short hair but if they were to see ME with it they would tell me to grow it the **** back. LOL

Cut it, don't let it go longer than half an inch, and it'll be easy to maintain, won't ever bug you, and will look acceptable in any situation - a funeral, a business meeting, gym, rock concert, or college party, regardless of the general set-up of the people present.
Then again, I might be biased. I'm a woman, I cut my hair off 5 years ago (had it shoulder-long, well maintained) and I'd NEVER let it grow out again, it's incredibly practical to have it short (SPECIALLY at the gym). And if a guy doesn't wanna date me because I have _short hair_? Wow, I'm glad I got rid of the shallow dude BEFORE I made a mistake of actually DATING him!Last edited by TurbulentFluid; 03-09-2006 at 03:59 PM.

Maybe a bit OT, but I probably wouldn't hire a long-haired dude into a public relations or sales job, though I wouldn't hesitate to hire them into an engineering or IT job. Though I must admit even then, all things being equal I'd likely choose the normal-looking guy over the long-haired one. Of course that rule's not written in stone, and if I get a good vibe/good recommendations/etc I'm not going to let someone's appearance get in the way.
But the point is, long hair could potentially hurt your job seeking prospects, depending on what you're looking for.

Like I said, I had short hair, but my gigantic head and the fact that my face stores alot of fat made me quite unattractive and women never even looked at me. i grew my hair out and all of a sudden I kept getting smiles and even got approached a few times. Long hair suits me, but I agree it's not for every man. I had a woman tell me to cut my hair but I'm sure if she saw me with very short hair she would never talk to me again.Last edited by Jay Rawd; 03-15-2006 at 07:23 AM.
