Remember this being posted awhile ago on here, it's for the 100m. Not sure if it's completely accurate, nor of the original poster.
Six Phases of the 100m dash
1. The start... 15 meters.
2. Acceleration phase... 15-20 meters.
3. Transition phase... 20-40 meters.
4. Maximum Velocity 1... 40-60 meters.
5. Maximum Velocity 2... 60-80 meters.
6. Speed Maintenance... 80-100 meters.Storm Trooper #19

well for a 40 yrd dash it goes like:
1) start...your starting postion
2) acceraration...the first 10 yards this gets you to top speed,
3)max velocity...11yrds and on, this is when you hit max speed, you continue to run no matter how far your running this stage has the same machanics if your runnning a 40 yrd dash or running 5 miles, but the difference is that for the 40 rd dash your SPRINTING and for the 5 miles youur running.
during accelaration, your legs are supposed to be pumping, (punching your knees diagnaly forword and aggresivley coming back down. this get you to you max veloctiy which is more of a cycle. your legs are doing a butkick then like a bike its rotating in a circle back to the gound.
your gonna wonder if these are right and where the h**l did i learn these. well i have a personal trainer who 1. was in the summer olypics back in the 80's running dashes and the 440. 2. she was a trainer for ray lewis and ed reed and the whole baltimore ravens team form 1999-2005, now shw works in mich, where i live. so everything i said is right
good lucki rep back.

ok, the names for a 100m is simple:
1)start {starting postion, before you even move}
2)acceraration {the first 10-15 yards [9.14m], this stage is meant to get the runner to max speed}
3)max velocity {right after accelaration, this is when you get to max speed *hence the name max velocity* this stage will last the rest of the run.
thats it, my first poston this thread talks in more detail about each stage.i rep back.
