I was tossing and turning last night wondering where I was going to head with my wrestling history class I'm teaching at the local college. I wanted to pose a topic that would challenge my students, but not too overwhelm them. I think I'm going to go with this subject, and thought maybe you guys here would enjoy discussing this as well.
Who do you feel was a better 'technical' wrestler, Farooq or Owen Hart.
Farooq was always known as being a brawler. Much like Stone Cold Steve Austin, Farooq's technical skill was often overlooked. He, like many other 'big' men ('Taker comes to mind) are often pushed as brawlers simply because of their size. It's what sells, but it also doesn't mean these guys can't get away from their brawling tactics and put on one hell of a technical wrestling match. I felt when Clarence Mason was leading Farooq, he often would put on very skillful matches. Thoughts?
Owen Hart tragically was taken from us too soon. We all remember him being a great dad and a comedian backstage. Owen wasn't just a high flyer however, he was a great mat technician. Does anyone remember Owen winning the King of the Ring to become the "King of Hearts"? This guy was trained in the dungeon for crying out loud! Thoughts?
Yes, it's easy to label Farooq as a brawler, and Owen as a high flyer, but part of being a Wrestling Historian, like I've stated many times, is to think outside of the box. That's what I'm encouraging you all (as well as my students) to do with subjects like these. I think we can get some very insightful discussions going with good wrestling topics like this. I'm all for the occasional comedy topic as well (just like in professional wrestling, I think it has its place) but I also really enjoy getting down to the nitty gritty and talking about wrestling the way it was meant to be.

How ****ing stupid. This guy is slowly ruining this forum, which is a shame.

As much respect as I have for Ron Simmons and Owen Hart, I must say that E-Burna is a troll still.

HOWEVER, burna does raise a good point. Big guys are classically misbooked as brawlers when in fact they can do some great mat wrestling. Cena can - but besdies his STFU, he doesn't really *show* what he can do. The WWE is a wrestling promotion, right? So why don't they let their dudes wrestle? Cena could be a great mat technician, but no no no, its easier to market clotheslines and FU's.
Simmons was always a favorite of mine, but I don't think he's on Owen Hart's level. I'd like to watch some old wrestling tapes of Simmons to see how he moved when he was younger, though.Last edited by animal2b; 03-01-2006 at 12:44 PM.

You know what he is..a wrestling TROLLLL. He thinks Goldberg is the greatest ever. He thinks David Flair is the next great thing and he thinks Ron Simmos is a great technical wrestler. Next he will say that Giant Gonzales was the most underrated wrestler ever. And he probably isnt a real wrestling historian(are there even such things) and doesnt teach at a college and if he did it would be a run down community college.

Owen is many times better in the ring. On the gridiron Simmons would own him.

Faarooq was a good wrestler before his back started giving him problems, but still nowhere as good a technical wrestler as Owen Hart. IMO Faarooq could've been a solid WWF champion if booked right when he was younger, and Owen probably would've been a world champ at some point as well.

I've never considered Simmons just a brawler...to me brawler is nothing more than punches, kicks, and clotheslines. He definitely relied on power moves, which obviously played to his size. But head to head, mat skills alone vs. Owen...Owen was probably one of the greatest all around wrestlers ever. Great high flyer, great mat technician, great personality and promos. Owen wins.

Anyway Owen Hart was better than Farooq IMO.
I really don't see the purpose to this thread. The two are on different levels in terms of ability, (not that Farooq was a bad wrestler), but how you came to the conclusion to compare these two wrestlers is beyond me.Kurt Angle is my #1 Wrestler.

W/the exception of the early flaming posts, this thread is decent. Not as much debate as I woulda liked, but considering the first few posts were all flaming, I guess that kinda killed it.

Here is one thing, but my career is another... Hopefully you can understand. Some of the guys here know more about my career, but they're guys I can trust, and it's not put out there for everyone to see.

If you refer to a fighter who you've never met in real life as "my boy" as though their performance somehow reflects well on you for simply being a fan, you're a lame ass.
