Do you know what their GI rating is compared to oats? I've heard of people eating a bagle with a glass of protein/water post workout instead of putting carbs in their pwo

if its whole wheat i don't see why its such a big conern; and by eating it with some protein, blood sugar spikes are a minimum.

They are fine if you need the carbs. That being said, most breads are less than ideal sources of carbohydrates...IMO.

The first ingredient is usually enriched wheat flour which isn't very good for you. That said I still sometimes eat one cause they're so good.

Great point! If you are in a bind and have a whole wheat bagel w/ some lean protein, you will be fine. However, iddeally breads are not the best, especially when trying to cut. Even if it says 100% whole wheat there is some enrichment and there is always High Fructose in there....

This is terrible news for me! I love bagels, don't eat em that often but they are really good. Guess I'll have to reconsider that next time...

    Thanks for the advice.

By F.D.A. law if it says 100% Whole Wheat it has to be all wheat, not just some wheat content plus enriched, dyed white bread. Pepperidge Farm whole wheat bagels are 100% whole wheat and have no HFCS. One P.F. whole wheat bagel does have nine grams of sugar and 250 cals though, so I switched over to a couple of slices of toasted ezekiel bread as part of my breakfast since I started cutting. (160 calorie for the two).

Ezekiel makes several bagel varieties - good for cutting or bulking.

Low GI? Correct my if I'm wrong but aren't bagels over 70 on the GI Scale and anything over 70 is not low GI right?

Also what do you put on your bagels with preworkout? Cream Cheese is a no no because of the fat.

I know that white bagels are over 70, but there is no way that 100% whole wheat bagles can be over that. The ones I eat have 12 grams of fiber.

A little bit of fat free Promise Light is a good butter substitute on a bagel or toast in the morning. I use a little on my toasted ezekiel bread that I eat every morning as part of my pre-workout breakfast.

    bagel

I usually eat a whole bagel every morning with about 1 tbs of honey drissled over each half and drink it down w/ 2 scoops of whey protein. I dont have much time to eat breakfast in the morning since i have to open shop at 6am, and love to sleep when i can. Gives me loads of energy till i can eat my cup of brown rice and chicken breast 3 hours later at break time. Oh yea...the bagel(whole wheat of course) w/ honey tastes a lot like a donut to me, but thats my humble opinion. I think ill try eating one before i work out, sounds like a good way to get that energy needed for the last hour of my workout. Work outs are 1 1/2 to 2 hours a day 5 days a week.

be careful of which whole wheat bagels you eat, quite a few have HFCS in them.

one bagel is like 5 servings of sliced bread, so i suggest for someone cuttting to have 2 slices of whole wheat bread and they are still eating less bread then one bagel

I eat maybe 2 a week (sometimes only 1) for my breakfast and oatmeal mixed with protein powder. Other than that I usually have 2 slices of toast with pb

Hi Im just getting used to dieting. And Bagels are aweosme, usually get the ones that are 12 grain or flax seed. 50g carbs, 12 g protein dont know about fats. But these would be okay right, since I tried eating oatmeal everyday last week for breakfeast and I hated it. Eating it every day that is.

Would this be okay for breakfeast then 1 bagel, tbsp peanut butter, and a protein shake= 50g carbs, 40g protein, 12g fat.

Bagels are a pretty good option, a better option would be oatmeal since the GI in oatmeal is lower. do you put PB on your bagel? I wonder what that would taste like on a toasted bagel hmmmm....lol
