Best way to buy 100+ lb dumbells?

I've peaked with what I have. I bought my 'collection' online but want to try and avoid that this time round because of shipping costs associated with mailing hundreds of pounds of weights through some obscure random freight carrier.

I have 1-50 lb adjustable dumbbells and 60-80 lb regular dumbells. I need to add to these somehow as cost effectively as possible. Anyone have any advice or estimates to how much it would cost to buy sets of 100-150 lb dumbbells? I live in the Bay Area so I figure there has to be an easy way to do this. The local sports shops here are kind of pathetic though.

You could buy a set of plate mates and buy dumbbells in 10 pound increments for the time being. That would save you half the money in the short run.

Keep looking because usually that area is a hotbed for stuff. Are you using craigsliissthelper.com or just craigslist.com ?

craigsliissthelper.com is now named http://www.searchtempest.com/ by the way.

They might not match your hexes, but have you considered building some prostyles?

You can watch on CL for the standard plates you'd need, then get the handles off eBay. I'd then go with the plate mates already suggested and make sets in 10 lb increments. The plate mates let you work the interim pairs.

A set like this would be 1500 lbs for pairs from 100 to 150. You could probably do this for around or maybe even under $1000. As long as you can find the plates for less or around fifty cents a pound.

The reality is there is no "cheap" way to buy 1500 lbs of plates unless you get lucky.

The heavy ironmasters up to 165 is a good idea too. But if you use them past 120 you void the warranty.

"I don't have time to lift, I make time"

Once, at my local gym, I went into the locker room to take a leak. There was this little hairy, naked guy (probably my age) with it swinging down to his knee. He was really showing it off and smiled at me (WTF?!?) and winked. Me, being me, told him out loud, "if you want to impress me with that, have it hold up a barbell with 2 plates a side."

Consider buying the handles from online vendors and buying the weight plates from local dealers or craigslist sellers. That is how I assembled my 165's, 185's and 200's. The cost of shipping makes buying 100+ not very practical when factoring in the shipping costs.

It's worth checking around on freight quotes. They can vary a lot depending on the company and where it's shipping from. A lot of companies are hurting for customers and may be more willing to get you a custom freight quote, or even eat some of the cost, than in the past.

In keetmans picture, the rack of db's has nice thick grips, like the grip on an olympic bar. The picture above this shows a picture of a db with a more standard type grip, which for my tastes, is too thin. Do they sell the handles for these with an olympic type grip?

Thanks for posting that link. I was unaware of it. New Sunday morning mandatory reading list.

It won't save you from having to look through a lot of useless listings. It will just help you find all of them close to you. It can only serch the words the writer puts in. If they put in "Dumbbells for sale", "two 140 two 200" it won't find anything for heavy at all.

Sometimes the local paper has a listing. I saw that Centrex in Middletown is auctioning off some extra equipment. Instead of doing it themselves the owners hired a firm. The auction is next Saturday in the morning:
