From experience, the initial 2 weeks will be predominantly water weight, however, some people are capable of producing ketones early on when adapting to this diet, and fat loss can start much sooner. As with any other diet, calories need to be accounted for, and I am sure you are well aware of maintaining a deficit, through exercise or diet. Ketogenic diets are muscle sparing, so on a deficit, you ought not to lose as much muscle weight as you would on other diets. If on keto for 3 weeks only, be very careful of the transition back into your 'normal' diet and also, expect low energy levels for the initial phase until you become 'keto adapted'.

Keto definitely works for women, but we have to be a bit stricter about calories than men. Many of them seem able to just eat to hunger and drop a ton of weight. So unfair. We also have to do more cardio. But on the plus side, a good keto diet should have you feeling well and not hungry, so it's easier to stick to the diet.
I lost about 45lb on keto, and have kept it off for six years now.

Cool. I am seriously considering doing keto, as nothing I have tried has worked and I know I can feel sluggish on carbs.
I'm expecting to feel like utter toss and not at al energetic for a while, but how long does this typically last?

If you've never done keto or low carb before, the first transition to ketosis can take 3 or 4 days. Keep drinking your coffee, do plenty of lifting or cardio and eat lots of fats to speed things up. Try starting on a Friday, so you'll have the weekend to get over the worst effects, By Monday, you should be starting to feel human again.
Once you have done keto, you should be able to get back to ketosis in a couple of days.

OK, thanks (and I can spend the weekend cooking up meat ) I'm not a coffee drinker, but does the caffeine help? If so I can see myself trying to drink tea with no sugar...

There are 2 women at my gym who started doing it after the new year. One is seeing fantastic results (16 pounds) and the other hasn't lost a pound but has lost 3 inches on her waist, an inch from each thigh and an inch from each arm. She wants to quit it because she thinks it not working I am telling her to believe the measuring tape, not the scale.

My fiance started using it about a month ago as well. With very infrequent gym trips (maybe once a week since starting keto) and semi-frequent cheating (once a week or so), she has still lost 4 pounds and last night we were both marveling at how flat her stomach looked. She is by no means "fat," so it will work for both fat people and people just looking to tone up a bit.
I really believe that this is the way people were intended to eat. It makes sense that it would lead to a more healthy, attractive body shape for both sexes.

Yes...it does work!!! Sometimes I do get discouraged by the water weight after a carb-up. But that is expected! But thankfully there is a GREAT group of people on here that tell you.."dont look at the scale, look at the tape." And with that...you will see a difference.
I've been on it going on 7 weeks. I LOVE IT! Its even been hard for me to do my carb-ups every other weekend, just to the fact I dread carbs! You do get an energy from this diet like no other. You feel full, and the cravings are kinda hard the first few days. I craved chocolate...but after that..it's easily sailing. You will need to do more Cardio as Eileen said, and I love to do high incline walking on a treadmill for 30-40 mins. It shows great results!!! Plus your weight training...
I've lost a little over 16lbs on this diet. And still losing. I just lost my water weight plus 2lbs from my weekend carb-up.
Just stay in your macros, and drink LOTS..lots..lots of water..and you will be fine. Goodluck!

Exactly. I've been reading 'THe Diet Delusion' (I think it's called 'Good Calories, Bad Calories' in the US) and it's a real eye opener. I;ve read the evidence, I'm convinced

I admit, it's the thought of the cravings getting to me, and at the moment, lack of cash! I'm lucky, we have some good farmer's markets round here and an abundance of decent meat (venison, game birds, buffalo, ostrich and other stuff apart from the usual pig, lamb and beef), fish and a butcher that sells random stuff like alligator and kangaroo With any luck I won't get bored, just have to plan well and wait for the market at the end of the month..... I have a week off at the end of the month and will start then so the cravings and teething problems don't get in the way of work

I think "The Diet Delusion" is a better title. It always seems like they dumb these things down for the American audience. But yeah, GCBC is an incredible book. I have recommended it to everyone I know and bought it for everyone in my family. So far, I am the only person in my family who has finished the book. It kills me, but it is hard to force people.
If you can understand the principles laid out in that book, the scientific logic is so overwhelming that you won't feel the urge to go back to your old way of eating.
Best of luck.

The good news is that it is not an expensive diet to do. I once calculated how much I spent on each person's diet and my keto one was the cheapest. Eggs are cheap, you can buy cheap cuts of beef (rib steak is lovely, and the cheapest you can buy). Gigot chops, turkey mince, chicken drumsticks and thighs, turkey drumsticks, tuna and mayo, tinned sardines, cheddar cheese, cream cheese, etc, are all cheap.
I spend most on organic veg from my local farmers market, but I'd be buying that on any diet.
Get nuts from the baking aisle on Tesco.
If you can get some, Lindt 99% chocolate is great for dealing with chocolate cravings. Mega chocolate hit, but you can only eat a square or two at a time.
You don't have to drink coffee. Just don't give it up when you start keto, or you'll have to deal with caffeine withdrawal as well as the first ketosis.

I only eat free range meat if I can help it, though when I can't afford it, Costco is my friend
That's good on the coffee - I drink a couple of cups a week when I'm working, or tea which I prefer....
Looking into ordering my vegbox again, I did like the organic veg, and they do one without potatoes onions and carrots (I never eat the bloody potatoes or carrots anyway!)

Organic meat is great, and an organic butcher is more likely to give you a deal on cheaper cuts like lamb shanks and oxtails.

I'm doing well on it. Love how easy it is not to "Cheat". I've always cheated after 1-2 weeks when eating carbs. Been on this Keto for almost 2 months and LOVE IT.

I have had good success with it. Dropped about 25 lbs since Nov. I also stalled for about 7 wks but continued to lose inches. I upped my calories and cardio and had a few cheat meals. Back to losing again. I really like that I am not hungry all the time and I don't miss the carbs at all.

High fat, moderate protein, low carb. Whey shake after lifting, carb refeed when you have thrashed every muscle group and feel like a slug. Base food on whole eggs, fish, fresh meat, chicken, lots and lots of green veg, olive oil, cheese, butter, cream, nuts and seeds. No sugar, flour, milk, fruit, processed foods.

I'm finding it an awesome diet.
Doing TKD, and my strength is fine - no cravings, less hunger than when eating carbs.. and the food tastes great.
Veins popping everywhere when I work out!
