Because fat people in general are not just fat, they are more muscular too. You just can't see it.

Plus, they usually have good leverages for moving weights (shorter limbs, wider hips, sturdy joints).

Studies have shown that if you gain 100 lbs, up to ~35 lbs or so is muscle. That is for people that DO NOT WORK OUT.

i am not fat, but i am bulky and stronger i would say than the average person.. but ive got enough muscle for it to show through my fat... varsity hockey and football in high school kept me active and strong.. but i am still big.
