Cool Protein makin me sick, please advise...

I am having such a hard time with my protein shakes. I get so nausea after and a headache, my stomach even seems to expand quite a bit for about 3 hours after taking it. I buy whey protein, choc., does it matter that is comes from a less expensive place (?) still has all the same ingredients :/
Anyway I have tried taking two scoops with water, with milk, and even cutting down to one scoop at a time. I am not sensitive to any foods that I know of.
I sooooooo need my protein, please help....any ideas?

Chicken, eggs, cottage cheese, etc

Sorry, but your symptoms do sound like a lactose issue. Maybe it's just too concentrated for your system. Speaking of concentrate, is it a concentrate or an isolate?

This is what I was trying to take...100% Whey Protein by Body Fortress. It has 52 g of protein in 2 scoops. Ingredients on back say it is a blend of concentrate and Isolate along with several other key 'helpers' like minerals and BCAAs.
I was thinking that if this were the symtoms of someone else, I would also say a lactose intolernce, but no other dairy has ever bothered me.
I was wondering if this is something that others have dealt with a found a way around it, I really need the extra protein. I have a hard time getting even a third in my daily food intake.
Thanks,
Tammy

I don't take supplements but from all that I have read you might want to try an isolate without all of that other stuff, including the concentrate. You can build a stack from there once you find a protein that doesn't bother you.

Normal lactose ingestion may not be a problem for you, but getting a larger than normal dose could be too much. Or it can be one of the other ingredients. Shop some isolates and try to get one with as few ingredients as possible.

I tend to agree w/ the above posting. It does sound like you may be lactose intolerant. I have a problem w/ gas, sometimes, when I drink too many protien shakes. lol. (my wife doesn't think that it's so funny tho) anyway, send me your unused portions C.O.D. I'll take it off your hands anytime! lol. If the prob. continues to get worse, obviously you'll want to see a doctor. Good luck to you. Johnny

First, at 124 lbs, 52g of protein is a lot. Try and shoot for one scoop per serving (26g), and no more than 30g if you have to. Second, how quickly are you drinking these. 99% of protein users slam their drinks and they overload the body's capacity to digest. Drink you shake over a 15 minute period. It's hard to do but it makes a world of difference. I've had people who originally had problems adding mass just slow down their shakes and put on 5-10 lbs over a 6 week period. Plus it is much easier on your digestive system.

Like the other posters said, an Isolate would be a good choice. We make one called Isoflex (http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/all/iso.html) and if you want just whey isolate and no artificial sweeteners, colors or anything go with the IsoNatural (http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/all/natural.html). Another option would be to look at a digestive enzyme like Aminogen to help your body break down the proteins.

Good luck!

Thank you all for your sugguestions. You were very helpful. This afternoon I tried one scoop with water and drank it in about 10 min. time. I got a little sick and a little headache, but it is something I can live with until I can research some other products.
Thanks bunches

I am taking Body Fortress and I find, besides its slight grittyness, it is a very good whey. Although I do one scoop because 52 grams is a bit crazy for me. I have no ill effects from it at all.

I have had trouble before with this too... What ultimately solved the problem for me (not lactose intolerant) is drinking my shake while eating other whole foods (ex. I have a shake with a serving of egg whites w/veggies or with a serving of cottage cheese w/fruit), rather than just the shake as a stand alone meal on an empty stomach. I also agree with the other poster that thought 52g protein in any one meal was excessive. You would have to have a whole lot more lean mass to support to need that much protein each meal to support it... Hope this helps!

Thank you all so much....I have tried all the different ideas to help 'down' this protein and nothing helped. It is now time for a new brand. Thank you so much for responding.

Another thing that it could be is the artificial sweetner that is in the protein. I have trouble with Whey not only because I have problems with galactose, but I have problems with a lot of other things, XTEND, XPAND, NOX....all because of the artificial sweetners. Just doesn't feel like it is "sitting well" if that makes sense. I get headaches as well and just an all around rock gut feeling.

There are some brands of protein powders that use Stevia that might work better for you.

Just one more thought. I would journal your foods and how you feel after you eat them. If you see a trend like the headaches and rock gut from drinking something else that has artificial sweetners in it, then it could be that.

There are so many additives in products it's hard to tell. Another thing to look for is psyllium ( I think I spelled that right). It is added to some powders for fiber and quiet a few people are allergic.

Good luck, hope you find out what it is and can avoid it!

All whey is not created equal. There are grades of WPC, which can be anywhere from 30 to 80. I don't have any lactose issues normally, but there are some proteins even I can't stomach.

I have some Body Fortress Whey at home - it makes me blow up like a balloon! Its not good.. however I switched to a new brand yesterday, and besides tasting SO much better, it hasnt made me at all bloated. (Hooray!)

Like everyone else said, go for an Isolate over a concentrate, more expensive but well worth the extra money. Also see if you can find one thats virtually lactose free. That might help.

Good luck.

I am lactose intolerant as well, but I can eat cheeses, pizza, etc with no problem. Yet, whey proteins would kill my stomach. What I would suggest is using IsoPure by Nature's Best. Their whey shouldn't make you sick at all.

Red face

Update....

I did switch brands (actually a couple of different ones since I started this thread) and I have had absolutely NO ill effects , amazing! That was what I was hoping for.
Just a nugget to throw out there...you probably have tried this, but I have found that I love putting a teaspoon of natural peanut butter in with my protein, just yum! Have a great day all!!!

NytroWheyExtreme by *********. Great protein, plus the added Arginine AKG.

I bought the Body Fortress 100% Whey once and it WRECKED my stomach. I always felt sick and like puking. I tried some different brands since them, and no problems. I just made sure that I was getting a really good quality protein after that.
