That is not entirely true. Look at ButterBean, James Toney, and others. Also starting to train now will get him training needed for boxing. Never put off.

I agree Benny! U need to be able to more about quickly and defend urself. Most boxing is in close and requires stamina and a high fitness level. It's great u can throw a powerful right hook but its a 3min round and u need to punch the whole way through as well as move and take hits, it ain't easy and its requires a great workrate
I'm growing bigger muscles everyday...and I love it!

Start boxing ASAP. I would suggest Muay Thai, because honestly I feel it to be a better overall workout (I do muay thai and have a limited experience with boxing, so I may be biased), but anything is better than nothing.

The great thing about boxing is that you will lost weight as a side effect of your training. The sooner you get into it, the sooner you can build up your skill base.

I lost 6 pounds in two weeks over the summer thru my training, as I was training for a fight. And I am fairly lean to begin with (around 8% bodyfat anyway) so I imagine that on a heavier body the results would be more dramatic if you go all out.
Our Arnold, whose arms are heavy,
    Vascular be thy veins
Nine sets of lunges, ten reps be done,
To add girth as it is to strengthen.
Give us this day our daily protein, and forgive us our fats,
As we forgive those who eat fat too.
And lead us not into overtraining, nor deliver us pizzas,
For thou art the king of the dumbell, the power clean, and the steroids forever,
    Amen.

    Gimpin' ain't easy

Yeah because my strength and speed hasnt increased the power of my punches...or my physical ability to react to block or fade...

Forget what the first guy said. It will make you lean and fast. Don't worry about the height/weight thing. If you're over-weight it will drop right off if you work har enough. Start now if you can. Too many people say, "I wanna get in shape first", but you'll never get in if you wait. And even though skills are definately the most important parts of boxing, strength does definately help. Just a thought Benny, watch a Marciano fight. Some people may disagree, but I'm a strong believer he was overated. No skill at all, but he was a beast.
"Tall men come down to my height when I hit 'em in the body."-Jack Dempsey

"In the ring, I never really knew fear."

no but it is an advantage to be taller than your opponent most boxers who are taller have longer reach. You should go to your nearest boxing gym or what not and the trainers would help you. Go there workout with other boxers and then you'll know if its for you or not.

Boxing is a great way to get into shape. You'll have a lot of work to do physically if you ever want to compete. But people of any shape or size can benefit from boxing training.

Hey man, glad to hear you're getting into boxing, it's a great sport!

I used to be in your shoes. I was strong, but I was fat...like, 33% bodyfat at the age of fifteen. Ouch. I played basketball and all, but I was looking to actually get into shape. I always liked boxing, and decided what the hell.

I don't care who you are or what you do, the first month of boxing will exhaust the hell out of you. It takes balls to get used to. I played basketball. I started and I never sat unless I got in foul trouble. I thought I was in good shape, despite being a fatty. I then realized, there's bad shape, good shape, great shape, bodybuilding competition shape..and then, at the top, boxing shape.

If you can stomach the first month, congradulations! Even if you decide not to compete, it's amazing excercize. I say go for it!

P.S. I'm now at 13% bodyfat, in case you were curious. (I was down at 7, but then I got injured, and I didn't want to get ripped again until recently, considering I barely made the cruserweight division as it is!)
P.P.S. Make sure you leave updates when you start! I want to know how it goes for you, maybe even give you advice if needed!

That's a great base for boxing at home. The name of the game is keep it simple and keep it moving. Rest 30 seconds between CIRCUTS.
Here's what I'd recomend to get ready:
-Start off with one minute of shadow boxing. Throw punches, dodge, you get the idea.
-Now, without rest, drop and do pushups for one minute. Don't count reps, just seconds.
-Up off your feet and do two minutes of squat jumps. Jump like normal, but exagerate the landing and do a squat. Spring up from there and yada yada yada. Once again, don't count reps, just seconds.
-Not too bad, now start over.(remember: No rest!)
-Back on the floor for one minute of crunches followed by thirty seconds of oblique crunches on each side (totaling one minute for the obliques)
-After that, time to work those calfs. I suggest donkey calf raises, so this way you don't need weight, just your body's natural resistance. Go for one minute...hell make it two, you need to get used to being on your toes!
-The final stretch...Phantom Chairs. Oh damn, there's no way you'll look cool doing this! But it works the legs like mad (working against no resistance can be quite the challenge!) Stand against a wall with your knees bent like you're at the bottom of a squat, with your back straight (like you're sitting in an invisible chair, hence the name!) Go for one and a half minutes.

That's a circut. Rest for thirty seconds. Repeat as many times as you can handle (I'd imagine that five should be damn near death for anyone!).

That'll be hell for anyone, but damn, you'll whip yourself into fighting shape!

you can get into it but if your that out of shape it's going to be really tough I'd advice you to do some cardio for a month or so first try to get the heart cardio up to par then get into the boxing

Some people may disagree, but I'm a strong believer he was overated. No skill at all, but he was a beast.
I think he had some skill
his appraoch was quite well thought out considering the rules of boxing
and I often saw him land more clean shots on people then one would think of someone renowned for hitting power
then again maybe in those days hitting power wasn't what it is today
I'm sure he could still throw of course
speaking of Marciano anyone know anything about his training?
it was probubly pretty standard for 50's training but I can't be sure
