You don't want to feel squats in your ass, you want to feel them in your quads. That said, doing ATG squats will grow your ass whether you feel them there or not. I do lunges sometimes and they make my glutes sore; I do full squats every time and they never make my glutes sore but I gots a big 'ol squat butt.

Gotta go with lunges for me. The few time I did them, my ass was sore.

I think ATG is the way to go. I'm very flat footed and quickly lose balance when I squat like this though cause my knees pronate and it feels dangerous. So if you happen to have the same problem, deep leg presses after a few sets of squats seem to have the same effect, but less tension on the knees and more on my hips.

The reason you probably do not feel them in your ass is more than likely your form. If you drive yourself up from your heels more i guarantee you will feel it. A lot of people push up from their toes, which isnt such a good idea anyway.
Good Luck.Sometimes you have to see the bottom before you reach the top

squatting below (or atleast to) parallel. When you are that down in the hole your hams and glutes really have to work hard to get you back into position where your quads can be at a biomechanical advantage (knees ~90 degrees and beyond). Focus on exploding your hips forward as you get out of the hole and you'll definitely feel it.
