WWE charging sports bars outreagous amounts for PPV

According to a reader report posted on the PWInsider.com pro wrestling website, WWE is now charging sports bars and clubs by the square foot to show their pay-per-view events. One bar owner in the Houston, Texas area said that to show a WWE pay-per-view it would cost in excess of $5,000. As a result, many sports bars no longer carry WWE pay-per-view events. In comparison, UFC charges sports bars less than $1,000 to show an event and as a result, they are carried in almost every major sports bar

Plan and simple its hiway robbery. You pay for cable service whether it be at home or in a business and the provider fee is all you should have to pay. 40 bucks a PPV is plenty, the people that come out and watch it weren't going to pay for it anyway. If they were getting it from the WWE direct then fine, but otherwise it should be teh same thing we pay to get it.

Its bull**** and bars should quit carrying it so that the occasional person who wonders in that might get turned on to wrestling and might be a fan and watch WWE programming, maybe order merchandise or who may order one from home never will. The WWE are crooks and rapists when it comes to stuff like this IMO.

UFC isn't much better but at least they have a set amount so a business has a fair and standard amount billed. Still though I think they pay for the cable through the provider they should pay the regular PPV fee. Whats next they gonna charge an extra 20 bucks for every guest you have over to watch teh PPV with you. Geez

I had no idea there were sports bars that showed the ppv's. If I did I would go there, have one drink and watch the whole thing for free. (yes, over 21 ID)

They had some PPV on a bar in Spain when I was there on vacation back in 2005, and we were having a drink in there when it suddenly started and I marked out Was awesome, we had partied every night so we wanted a calm one. The rest got a calm night and I got a beer and a free PPV. What else can be desired?

Oh yeah, well I'd go and get my ass kicked out because I am a 16 year old punk, then I would try to fight my way back in, only to get my ass handed to me by a 220lb bouncer

I go to my local Buffalo Wild Wings. They've carried all the WWE ppv's (and now UFC) since they opened in Spring 2003.

The manager there did confirm the price of $5,000 for each ppv to me in the past. But he also told me "that's nothing" compared to what they used to pay for boxing ppv's. Can't remember what that figure was.

They no longer carry boxing as a result. When they did there was a $5 or $10 cover for it. They charge nothing for WWE events. Never been there for a UFC.

However within the last few months two other BWW's have stopped showing WWE events. Thankfully my local BWW still has them and they are the only bar near me to have them. Being a regular, the manager told me they do really well in food sales for WWE so as of now it's worth their while.

The local Hooter's and two other local bars used to get them but they too stopped months ago.

wow that's really over the top. these days i wouldn't pay equivilent to $15-20 for a WWE ppv. NWO looks good and the Rumble sounded good, and of course WM24, but in general i wouldn't pay for a ppv these days.

They pay a large fee to show PPV because it is being showed by place of business and not being viewed in home.

Yeah sports bars have to pay ****loads for boxing/fighting/wrestling matches...anything PPV really. If it's a well known place they usually show it anyway because they make so much on alcohol off the people that come to watch.

When I was stationed in Bethesda, Maryland back in 2002, I was looking all over for a bar or resturant that showed WrestleMania. By the time I found one, the place was packed. To me, it wasn't a surprise that WWE was charging high rates. But they figured that any (non-military) establishment that aired their programming would benefit from it, so there wouldn't be any backlash from over charging...

Nope, that's why they have that warning at the beginning of the broadcast saying it's for personal viewing, not public viewing. They have to pay the broadcaster a large fee to make up for the fact that those people aren't buying the ppv. I've watched nearly every ppv in the last 2 years at a local bar/pool hall/arcade place around here. If they stop I highly doubt I'll be watching any ppvs for a while. Not worth 45-50 bucks.

The bars get charged a lot to carry it because they know that people who don't want to pay for will go to the bar and watch it either for free or a very small cover charge. Meanwhile the bar is making extra money in alcohol and food sales.

Why should they let the bar buy it for the same price as an individual when the bar will make a ton of extra money in alcohol and food sales?

That would be stupid on the part of the WWE, UFC, and Boxing.

The bar where I shoot pool get charged about $1000 for wrestling and $2000 and up for boxing. I don't know what they paid for the UFC last night but the place was packed by 9PM.
People buying dinner, drinks, and paying over $9/hour for pool.

Being on the pool team, I play for free. I played from 3:30 to 10 and it didn't cost me a dime.

I don't think it's so much charging bars more. it does make sense to charge them more than the $40 ppv price since they can actually make money off airing the ppvs (bringing in customers that might not normally come in to sit there for 2 1/2 - 3hrs buying food and drinks). the problem is how much they're charging. $5000 to show a ppv is ridiculous. if I owned a bar I don't know that I'd be willing to pay that, and we all know that I'm a big wwe fan. it just doesn't make sense. I could be wrong, but I doubt bars can make much profit, if any at all, paying $5000 to show the ppv, unless it's a good sized place.

Bdubs gets crazy for UFC. I got there at 8:15 last night for UFC, and we didn't get a table until we snagged one in the bar at almost 11. Our name never got called for the waiting list.

thats what the nfl does for sports bars for the nfl ticket too. I dont see the problem. If you want to see a PPV, get about 5 or 10 friends and kick in $5 each.

I know for a fact that a lot of bars around here aren't being charged for airing the PPVS. They just steal satellite signals.

Only problem with that is, if the satellite goes down, so does the PPV.

The WWE is willing to prosecute cable theifs even when the company isn't. Nothing has really been said about any MMA promotion. While I think its unfair to charge a different amoung when subscirbe adn pay a set flat rate, teh WWE seems to be the only ones ttying to take it ot extremes and get every penny they can. They will probably hurt themselves more than help if things continue this way.

Geez

Holy ****, someone in here with some common sense.

Do you know what the margin is on the food and drink you pay for at the bar? If you turn up and buy nothing you look like a douchebag. If you do buy, like everyone else does, the bar that night will more than make up for the fee they pay - even if the patrons are not all wrestling fans.

    Actually you don't know I don't own a bar?

    I could, but your right I don't

I also agree with the get several friends together idea. We usually have a couple bring beer, others chip in, and either we cook something easy like hotdogs, burgers, or burritios and pay it ourselves or somebody will chip in there s well.

Still though I understand the concept but if you subscribe to teh provider then everybody should pay the same price. I don't agree with it for teh NF:, WWE, UFC, Boxing or any of them. Yes bars make money but how many beers do you have to sell to make 5k

Alot of bars used to carry them but they don't serve food, they are just typical friendly little taverns. All they serve is beer and it was a friendly thing to carry them because the same regulars showed up. Now they can't. I get the idea of more people watching but to me they should be happy its expanding their product. hell me and a friend can go watch a PPV or UFC, buy 20 wings and have a couple or few beers and spend the amout of the PPV maybe even less depending on where we go. So yeah it benefits us to go, but not the bar. I imagine alot of bars will quit carrying it and while the ones that do may stand a chance to rack it in, the people who weren't going to buy it still won't and people who may care about the events won't. They could lose future PPV buys, future ticket buyers, future merch buyers, and future fans period. In the end it probably equals out. My thing is I am more in favor of wanting people to be fans than to see different promotions push fans away.

Here's what may suck for me.

I havent gotten a ppv since WM 23 last year. I plan on getting WM 24. But I hope I can record it like I always record ppv since I'm paying for it to keep it for good.

As of late with my cable company, I can't record anything off of any pay channel (HBO, Starz, Encore) or WWE 24/7. A notice comes up saying "can not record. copy protected." Regular TV and basic cable is no problem.

I hope this isn't going to be the same case for ppv too or I'm going to be pissed.

    Well it is offical.

Just talked to my cable company and told them about not being able to record the pay channels. The woman told me "yes sir. that is us blocking you. you will no longer be able to record pay cable."

I asked her if that includes ppv to confirm my fears and she did. PPV can not be recorded either. At least with the new DVD recorders.

I could go old school with VHS but at all my local stores tapes are pretty much extinct.

Well I for one will be boycotting ppv and may even dump HBO. I can see a whole lot of ticked off people that will find out the hardway when they try to record.
