Boxing
So any of you old guys still fight?I'm 40 now and want to box again,or at least spar a little.Maybe once a week.I love it but I think i'm getting too old and am afraid of the hits to the head even with headgear.Every time i pass the local boxing club gym I resist the urge to stop and go in.Anyone still do it?

One of my best friend's is a boxer, an ex boxer. He used to fight professionally. I don't know at what level. He is now 65 and he teaches boxing to teenagers. He has had a hip joint replaced and had cancer and he's still at it LOL You could join a boxing gym and help out with young men learning or you could be a punching bag for sparring, it's just practice so you won't really get hurt. Or you can just go and practice and not fight. I was considering becoming a punching bag for the girls myself. You are not too old.
You could also try kickboxing. My son goes to that and he loves it. It involves punching and kicking and lots of practice. Very strenuous sport.

It's something I've never done, but oddly enough something I've thought about for a bit now. Do you need to be naturally aggresive or competitive to do it?
My son's godfather used to box, but I could never imagine getting into a ring to try to hurt someone, even though they would be trying to hurt me... lol
Maybe its just something I'm trying to come to terms with about myself, I'll only fight if I have to, I won't walk away but I'll try to talk first, and touch wood, I haven't had too fight so much.
Sorry to hijack your thread ;-(

Sounds like you need to determine the nature of your headaches first. Otherwise it could be dangerous for you. You have to pass a physical and gt the doctor to check you out for everything before you can join a boxing gym anyway. Mention the headaches and see what comes up.

LOL on the guys at work part.. I didn't mean about proving anything to anyone. What I was badly trying to ask is that because I'm a probably a bit scared of being hurt, would I be wasting my time going to a boxing gym?
I have fought, not very often, and haven't come off too bad, but only when I've been too pushed., when I had or needed to fight for my own safety.
I don't know if its just in me to do?

Hmmm.. the last time I tried boxing I almost broke a guy's fist from hitting it so hard with my chin. I decided at that point that I didn't want to see anyone else get hurt that badly.

You're right it takes a special kind of guy to fight MMA. And although I respect Boxers and the sport of Boxing. I love and embrace ALL of the Mixed Martial Arts (including Boxing) that have come together to give us the UFC, PRIDE FC, WEC and all other Cage Fighting Sports.
What can I say? I just love this stuff!

Agreed!
MMA doth rock!
I think it brings the best of many combative forms and distills them into a sport that is extremely entertaining as well as being very technical. It can be enjoyed by casual viewers and seasoned martial artists as well.
As for the original post I think you would have a blast in boxing, not to mention the fitness benefits of training. whether you fight like a boxer is one thing but if you train like one your bound to lose body fat and gain functional strength, double true for mma.

Anybody Remember this?
Muhammad Ali vs. Antonio Inoki
Tokyo, June, 1976; Tim Wehr, 'Stars and Stripes'
Muhammad Ali makes a face at his next opponent, wrestler Antonio Inoki, during a luncheon at the Foreign Correspondents Club of Japan. In the background is Jun Rhee, a Korean taekwondo expert who was said to be teaching karate to Ali in preparation for the exhibition event that would be called 'unusual' by the more generous and 'a farce' by others.

Inoki reels from one of the few punches Ali managed to throw during the match.
The Match:
The majority of the match saw Inoki on his back kicking Ali's leg. In the 15 rounds, Ali threw less than a dozen punches. In this match, the only losers were the fans. The match itself was declared a draw. Ali made over $6 million for the match while Inoki made only $2 million. The wrestling company that he had a stake in got to keep the gate from the live event and portions of the closed circuit telecast.
Additional Note: was originally going to be no-holds-barred, Inoki was not allowed to use any wrestling. The results were not pretty.

I'd stop in the gym.
Your lucky to have a boxing gym near by. I don't
The training is good for you and sparring is training for both sparring partners.
You just have to find a good sparring partner. Sparring is training, not a competition.
BTW, I'm jealous, I'd jump at the chance to spar a little and I'm +50.
