    Study #1

    Dietary soy-phytoestrogens decrease testosterone levels and prostate weight without altering LH, prostate 5alpha-reductase or testicular steroidogenic acute regulatory peptide levels in adult male Sprague-Dawley rats.

    Nutritional factors, especially phytoestrogens, have been extensively studied for their potential beneficial effects against hormone-dependent and age-related diseases. The present study describes the short-term effects of dietary phytoestrogens on regulatory behaviors (food/water intake, locomotor activity and body weight), prostate weight, prostate 5alpha-reductase enzyme activity, reproductive hormone levels, and testicular steroidogenic acute regulatory peptide (StAR) levels in adult Sprague-Dawley rats. Animals were fed either a phytoestrogen-rich diet containing approximately 600 microg/g isoflavones (as determined by HPLC) or a phytoestrogen-free diet. After 5 weeks of consuming these diets, plasma phytoestrogen levels were 35 times higher in animals fed the phytoestrogen-rich vs phytoestrogen-free diets. Body and prostate weights were significantly decreased in animals fed the phytoestrogen-rich diet vs the phytoestrogen-free fed animals; however, no significant change in prostate 5alpha-reductase enzyme activity was observed between the treatment groups. Locomotor activity levels were higher in the phytoestrogen-rich vs the phytoestrogen-free animals during the course of the treatment interval. Plasma testosterone and androstenedione levels were significantly lower in the animals fed the phytoestrogen-rich diet compared with animals fed the phytoestrogen-free diet. However, there were no significant differences in plasma LH or estradiol levels between the diet groups. Testicular StAR levels were not significantly different between the phytoestrogen-rich vs the phytoestrogen-free fed animals. These results indicated that consumption of dietary phytoestrogens resulting in very high plasma isoflavone levels over a relatively short period can significantly alter body and prostate weight and plasma androgen hormone levels without affecting gonadotropin or testicular StAR levels. The findings of this study identify the biological actions of phytoestrogens on male reproductive endocrinology and provide insights into the protective effects these estrogen mimics exert in male reproductive disorders such as benign prostatic hyperplasia and prostate cancer.

    Study #2

    Inverse association of soy product intake with serum androgen and estrogen concentrations in Japanese men.

    The cross-sectional relationships of soy product intake and serum testosterone, estrone, estradiol, sex hormone-binding globulin, and dihydrotestosterone were examined in 69 Japanese men. Soy product intake was estimated from a semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire. Serum estradiol concentration was significantly inversely correlated with soy product intake (r = -0.32, p = 0.009), and serum estrone concentration was nonsignificantly inversely correlated with soy product intake (r = -0.24, p = 0.05) after controlling for age, body mass index, smoking status, and ethanol intake. Total and free testosterone concentrations were inversely correlated with soy product intake after controlling for the covariates, but these correlations were of border line significance (r = -0.25, p = 0.05 and r = -0.25, p = 0.06, respectively). Similar correlations were observed for these hormones with isoflavone intake from soy products. The data suggest that soy product intake may be associated with the endogenous hormone levels in Japanese men.

    Effect of protein source on resistive-training-induced changes in body composition and muscle size in older men.

    BACKGROUND: Aging is associated with reductions in muscle mass and strength, but nutrition and exercise interventions can delay this progression and enhance the quality of life. OBJECTIVE: We examined whether the predominant source of protein consumed by older men influenced measures of muscle size and strength, body composition, resting energy expenditure, and skeletal muscle creatine concentrations in response to 12 wk of resistive training. DESIGN: After consuming a lactoovovegetarian (LOV) diet for 2 wk, 21 men aged 65 +/- 5 y were randomly assigned to either consume a beef-containing (BC) diet (n = 10) or to continue the LOV diet (n = 11) throughout resistive training. The BC diet included 0.6 g protein. kg(-1). d(-1) from beef and the LOV diet included 0.6 g protein. kg(-1). d(-1) from textured vegetable protein (soy) sources. The remaining protein in the diets came from self-selected LOV sources. RESULTS: The mean total protein intake for both groups ranged from 1.03 to 1.17 g. kg(-1). d(-1) during the intervention. Men in both groups had improvements (14-38%) in maximal dynamic strength of all the muscle groups trained with no significant difference between groups. With resistive training, cross-sectional muscle area of the vastus lateralis increased in both groups (4.2 +/- 3.0% and 6.0 +/- 2.6% for the LOV and BC groups, respectively) with no significant difference between groups. Body composition, resting energy expenditure, and concentrations of muscle creatine, phosphocreatine, and total creatine did not differ significantly between groups or change over time. CONCLUSIONS: These data suggest that increases in muscle strength and size were not influenced by the predominant source of protein consumed by older men with adequate total protein intake.

    Effects of a soy protein diet on exercise-induced muscle protein catabolism in rats.

    OBJECTIVE: We examined effects of dietary soy protein isolate on muscle calpain activity and myosin heavy chain (MHC) degradation in rats performing an acute running exercise. METHODS: In rats fed a 20% casein diet, the treadmill running exercise, fixed at 80 kg/m, transiently increased calpain activity in gastrocnemius muscles in parallel with the release of creatine kinase into plasma. The fixed running also caused an accumulation of immunoreactive degradation fragments of MHC in the muscle. Feeding a 20% soy protein isolate diet as opposed to the control casein diet to rats significantly suppressed the running-induced activation of mu- and m-calpains, fragmentation of MHC, and release of creatine kinase into plasma (P < 0.05). RESULTS: Rats fed the soy protein isolate diet had significantly higher calpastatin activity in gastrocnemius muscle than did rats fed the casein diet (P < 0.05), indicating that this increase inhibits the exercise-induced autoactivation of calpain. Activities of proteasome, cathepsin B + L, and antioxidant enzymes and the levels of glutathione and thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances in the muscle did not differ between the diet groups at the end of the exercise. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that diets containing soy protein prevent exercise-induced protein degradation in skeletal muscle, possibly through inhibiting the calpain-mediated proteolysis.

    Hormonal effects of soy in premenopausal women and men.

    Over the past few years, there has been increasing interest in the possible hormonal effects of soy and soy isoflavone consumption in both women and men. Soy consumption has been suggested to exert potentially cancer-preventive effects in premenopausal women, such as increased menstrual cycle length and sex hormone-binding globulin levels and decreased estrogen levels. There has been some concern that consumption of phytoestrogens might exert adverse effects on men's fertility, such as lowered testosterone levels and semen quality. The studies in women have provided modest support for beneficial effects. One cross-sectional study showed serum estrogens to be inversely associated with soy intake. Seven soy intervention studies controlled for phase of menstrual cycle. These studies provided 32-200 mg/d of isoflavones and generally showed decreased midcycle plasma gonadotropins and trends toward increased menstrual cycle length and decreased blood concentrations of estradiol, progesterone and sex hormone-binding globulin. A few studies also showed decreased urinary estrogens and increased ratios of urinary 2-(OH) to 16alpha-(OH) and 2-(OH) to 4-(OH) estrogens. Soy and isoflavone consumption does not seem to affect the endometrium in premenopausal women, although there have been weak estrogenic effects reported in the breast. Thus, studies in women have mostly been consistent with beneficial effects, although the magnitude of the effects is quite small and of uncertain significance. Only three intervention studies reported hormonal effects of soy isoflavones in men. These recent studies in men consuming soyfoods or supplements containing 40--70 mg/d of soy isoflavones showed few effects on plasma hormones or semen quality. These data do not support concerns about effects on reproductive hormones and semen quality.

    Effect of soymilk consumption on serum estrogen and androgen concentrations in Japanese men.

    Soy consumption has been associated with a reduced risk of prostate cancer. The mechanism for this association may involve the effect of soy on the endocrine system. We conducted a randomized dietary intervention study to determine the effects of soy consumption on serum levels of steroid hormones in men. Thirty-five men were randomly assigned to either a soymilk-supplemented group or a control group. The men in the soy-supplemented group were asked to consume 400 ml of soymilk daily for 8 weeks. The men in the control group maintained their usual diet. Blood samples were obtained just before the initiation of the dietary period and thereafter every two weeks for 12 weeks. Changes in hormone concentrations were analyzed and compared between the two groups using the mixed linear regression model against weeks from the start of the dietary period. The mean (SD) soymilk intake estimated from dietary records during the dietary study period was 342.9 (SD, 74.2) ml in the soymilk-supplemented group. There was a significant difference between the two groups in terms of changes in serum estrone concentrations, which tended to decrease in the soy-supplemented group and increase in the control group over time. None of the other hormones measured (estradiol, total and free-testosterone, or sex hormone-binding globulin) showed any statistical difference between the two groups in terms of patterns of change. The results of the study indicate that soymilk consumption may modify circulating estrone concentrations in men.

    Activation of skeletal muscle protein breakdown following consumption of soyabean protein in pigs.

    Diets with protein of inferior quality may increase protein breakdown in skeletal muscle but the experimental results are inconsistent. To elucidate the relationship, pigs were fed isoenergetic and isonitrogenous diets based on soyabean-protein isolate or casein for 15 weeks, with four to six animals per group. A higher plasma level of urea (2.5-fold the casein group value, P = 0.01), higher urinary N excretion (2.1-fold the casein group value, P = 0.01), a postabsorptive rise in the plasma levels of urea, 3-methylhistidine and isoleucine in soyabean protein-fed pigs suggested recruitment of circulatory amino acids by protein breakdown in peripheral tissues. Significant differences between dietary groups were detected in lyso****l and ATP-dependent proteolytic activities in the semimembranosus muscle of food-deprived pigs. A higher concentration of cathepsin B protein was found, corresponding to a rise in the cathepsin B activity, in response to dietary soyabean protein. Muscle ATP-stimulated proteolytical activity was 1.6-fold the casein group value (P = 0.03). A transient rise in the level of cortisol (2.9-times the casein group value, P = 0.02) occurred in the postprandial phase only in the soyabean group. These data suggest that the inferior quality of dietary soyabean protein induces hormonally-mediated upregulation of muscle protein breakdown for recruitment of circulatory amino acids in a postabsorptive state.

    Soy has some bad raps on it, but after further researching I found some other things as well.



    The question was' can soy feminize a boy?
    The answer was:
    When you consider that millions of men in China, Japan and other Asian countries have had soy foods in their daily diets from earliest childhood, you can appreciate that the plant estrogens they contain have no discernible effect on male sexual development, and no feminizing effects at all. Given the huge populations of Asian countries there's no reason to think that soy affects male fertility, either.

    However, concerns in the Western world about the effects on boys and men from eating soy foods have been raised repeatedly and addressed in numerous laboratory and population studies. Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania surveyed men and women who, as babies, were given soy-based formulas to see if any of them had sexual, fertility or hormonal problems; they were then compared to a matched group raised on cow's milk formula. The only discrepancies noted were some minor menstrual complaints among the women (their periods lasted one-third of a day longer and advertisement

    they reported slightly more menstrual pain). Results were published in the August 15, 2001, issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.

    In March 2002 the Journal of Nutrition published results of a survey of men consuming soy foods or supplements containing 40-70 milligrams of isoflavones (the phytogenic components). None of the studies showed that consuming soy had any effects on reproductive hormones or semen quality, both changes that you might expect to see before any overt “feminization” would occur.

    Including soy foods in your diet may enhance your health and help protect against heart disease and prostate cancer. I recommend two servings per day of such soy foods as tofu, tempeh (soy protein), soy milk or edamame. That would add up to about 40 milligrams of isoflavones, less than the amount consumed in the traditional Asian diet. The earlier in life one begins to consume soy, the greater the protection against breast and prostate cancer seems to be.

    Couldn't we just take fish oil and other alpha-linolenic acids for this same effect and avoid soy altogether? The whole argument about eastern cultures eating alot of soy and not having the same high rates of prostate etc is invalid IMO. Reason being is western diets are so high in Omega-6 (linolenic acid/arachidoni acid) becuase our diets are high in vegetable oils and such, while eastern diets are so low in these oils. In fact, the low levels in the east may be from the high levels on alpha-linolenic acid derived from the EPA/DHA found in fish oil.

Body and prostate weights were significantly decreased in animals fed the phytoestrogen-rich diet vs the phytoestrogen-free fed animals; however, no significant change in prostate 5alpha-reductase enzyme activity was observed between the treatment groups. Locomotor activity levels were higher in the phytoestrogen-rich vs the phytoestrogen-free animals during the course of the treatment interval. Plasma testosterone and androstenedione levels were significantly lower in the animals fed the phytoestrogen-rich diet compared with animals fed the phytoestrogen-free diet. However, there were no significant differences in plasma LH or estradiol levels between the diet groups. Testicular StAR levels were not significantly different between the phytoestrogen-rich vs the phytoestrogen-free fed animals. These results indicated that consumption of dietary phytoestrogens resulting in very high plasma isoflavone levels over a relatively short period can significantly alter body and prostate weight and plasma androgen hormone levels without affecting gonadotropin or testicular StAR levels. The findings of this study identify the biological actions of phytoestrogens on male reproductive endocrinology and provide insights into the protective effects these estrogen mimics exert in male reproductive disorders such as benign prostatic hyperplasia and prostate cancer.

    Diets high in soy-based products are well known for their estrogenic activity. Genistein, the predominant phytoestrogen present in soy, is known to interact with estrogen receptors (ER) alpha and beta and elicits reproductive effects in developing rodents. In the rat, genistein is metabolized predominantly to glucuronide and sulfate conjugates, neither of which is capable of activating ER. Therefore, it is critical to understand the delivery of free and conjugated genistein across the placenta to the fetus following maternal genistein exposure such that the potential fetal exposure to free genistein can be assessed. Genistein (4 or 40 mg/kg) was administered to pregnant Sprague-Dawley rats by oral gavage daily from gestation day (GD) 5 through 19 or on GD 19 alone. Maternal and GD 19 fetal tissues were collected 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 12, and 24 h following administration of the final dose on GD 19. Concentrations of genistein, genistein glucuronide, and genistein sulfate were quantitated by LC-MS/MS. In maternal plasma, genistein glucuronide was the predominant metabolite. In the fetal plasma, genistein glucuronide and genistein sulfate were the primary metabolites. Genistein levels in maternal and fetal plasma were much lower than its conjugates. The concentration of genistein in placental tissue was higher than either conjugate. Fetal concentrations of unconjugated genistein following administration of 40 mg/kg were above the EC50 for ERbeta activation. Repeated administration of 40 mg/kg genistein resulted in minor changes in genistein kinetics in the pregnant rat compared to single administration of the same dose. These data suggest that conjugated forms of genistein are not transported across the placenta. High placental concentrations of genistein indicate the placenta is a potential target organ for genistein action during gestation.

Our previous studies investigated pharmacokinetics and disposition of genistein during adult and fetal periods and this study describes the internal exposures of post-natal day 10 (PND10) rat pups due to lactational transfer of genistein. Conjugated and aglycone forms of genistein were measured by using LC/MS/MS in serum (PND10) and milk (PND7) from lactating dams consuming a genistein-fortified soy-free diet, and in serum from their pups at a time when milk was the only food source (PND10). This study shows that limited lactational transfer of genistein to rat pups occurs and that internal exposures to the active aglycone form of genistein are generally lower than those measured previously in the fetal period. These results suggest that developmental effects attributable to genistein exposure in our chronic and multi-generation studies are more likely to result from fetal exposures because of the higher levels of the active estrogenic aglycone form of genistein in utero, although the possibility of neonatal responses cannot be excluded.

LDL particles were characterized by polyacrylamide gradient gel electrophoresis in 36 moderately hypercholesterolemic men and women (LDL cholesterol > 3.36 mmol/L). All subjects consumed in random order each of the four diets (soy protein depleted of isoflavones, soy protein enriched in isoflavones, animal protein with no added isoflavones, and animal protein with added isoflavones) for 6 wk. Consumption of soy protein was associated with a larger LDL peak particle size relative to animal protein (P < 0.01). Soy protein also decreased the cholesterol levels in LDL < 25.5 nm by 12.3% (P < 0.001) and increased cholesterol levels in LDL > 26.0 nm by 14.3% (P < 0.05) relative to animal protein. Isoflavones did not affect these LDL particle characteristics. Soy protein shifted LDL particle distribution to a less atherogenic pattern and this effect is independent of soy’s isoflavone component.

    "Ok, now here is where things start to get interesting as it applies the bodybuilders. Though soy proteins contain these estrogenic compounds, it appears that they are "tissue specific." One study that used Rhesus monkeys found that soy proteins had no effects on the reproductive hormones of these animals. Testosterone, DHEAS, sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG), testicular weight, prostatic weight, and other measurements were taken. They found no difference between male animals who ate soy protein that contained the plant estrogens and those who ate soy with the estrogens removed, leading researchers to conclude: "thus, the isoflavones (genistein and diadzein) in soy protein improve cardiovascular risk factors without apparent deleterious effects on the reproductive system..., " and "Genistein's effects appear to be tissue specific, with estrogen agonist effects on plasma lipid concentrations, plasma lipoprotein distributions and preservation of bone mass that are similar in magnitude to mammalian estrogens, but without estrogenic effects..." From this and other data, it seems the phyto estrogens in soy can lower cholesterol and improve heart disease risk without systemic estrogenic effects (i.e. gyno, bodyfat increases, etc.) that would normally be seen if say a bodybuilder took estrogen pills or from the conversion of certain steroids to estrogen. This study is a little more relevant to us humans being it was done with male monkeys which are far more similar animals to people than rats. However, I think that an upper level of soy protein that contains phyto estrogens could cause systemic estrogenic effects if enough were taken, but that's only speculation on my part. Also, the use of soy isolates by men might be better cycled rather than taken all the time being we are not 100% sure at this time about the long term estrogenic potential of soy proteins in athletes. The ability of soy protein to lower cholesterol without other estrogenic effects could be useful to bodybuilders using anabolic steroids who tend to see a rise in cholesterol and/or LDL

    The effects of plant hormones are going to be limited. These minor effects measured in rats and the fact that the word estrogen is in mentioned despite it being a plant hormone has led to too much hype over soy.
    When we can see that bodybuilders consuming soy compared with those with no soy in their diet or some other kind of similar study, I'm not going to believe the hype.
    The potential effects of plant estrogens so far barely show any true effect on humans, in the same way that animal hormones like bovine growth hormone just can't replace the human hormones. The only articles I have seen that had a decent controlled measurement showed some dangers from tofu and relations to Alzheimer's, though that is sorta irrelevant to bodybuilding.

    I think it funny how many people on here grew tits from taking something like SD and ATD later. Yet they are scared of going near a soy patty like its going shrink and feminize them.

    here's what happened, i had a couple of new proteins, so i begin using a couple of them for my nighttime shake. then my nipps start bothering me and i am not even on cycle, finallly i start looking for the source. it was the protein which had soy in it. once i dropped it the symptoms ceased. same thing happens if i eat too much soybeans or tofu.

    Wow. thank you for sharing. Personally, I have stayed away from soy products on both sicentific and anecdotal evidence, but hearing first hand only solidifies my stance.

    Study finds it may protect against prostate cancer and baldness


    FRIDAY, April 23 (HealthDayNews) -- Two very different uses for soy are covered in the same study, published in the April issue of the journal Biology of Reproduction .

    The protein-rich plant may help protect men against prostate cancer and male pattern baldness, the research says.

    Scientists from Colorado State University, Brigham Young University and Children's Hospital Medical Center of Cincinnati discovered that consuming soy creates a molecule called equol in the intestine.

    Equol is a natural and powerful blocker of a potent male hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT) involved in prostate cancer and male pattern baldness.

    "This molecule is remarkable," Kenneth Setchell, director of clinical mass spectrometry at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, said in a prepared statement. Setchell first identifed equol in humans 20 years ago.

    "These findings are of immense clinical importance because blocking the action of the potent androgen (male hormone) DHT has been one of the holy grails of the pharmaceutical industry as a strategy for treating prostate cancer and other related diseases," Setchell adds. "This natural metabolite made from soy isoflavones, which are found in high amounts in soybeans, does this very effectively."

    In a recent study looking at soy's affect on reproductive health in healthy males, men given 40 mg of soy isoflavones daily for 2 months (there are 20 mg of isoflavones in 1 cup of soy milk; 38 mg in 1/2 cup of tofu), there were no effects on serum sex hormones, testicular volume, or semen quality. This was deemed the first study to examine the effects of a phytoestrogen supplement on reproductive health in males. (Mitchell et al., Clinical Science 100(6):613-618, 2001 June)

    Note: In the above study, subjects were fed soy Isoflavones only. Not sure how results might be altered were they fed whole soy beans, or a whole soy based product. Anyone?

    So can we throw out the baby formula studies?

    We aren't developing infants I don't see relevance. I would say we already know what is best for infants, breast milk.

    Just my opinion.

    well maybe i have an allergic reactin to it. but i doubt it, as the same thing occurs from ingesting varius forms of it. i also said gyno related symtpoms, meaning nipple tenderness and itchiness.
