Question Is Soy Protein THAT bad for men?

I am allergic to milk and milk products, not just lactose intolerant, but allergic. As many times as I've tried, I just can't tolerate whey, casein, milk, cottage cheese, etc. (migraines, the runs, fatigue, flu-like symptoms, sinuses . . . )

I had been supplementing with non-GMO Soy Isolate Powder (Supro) from Vitamin World and tolerated it pretty well. I quit taking it after reading all the horror stories about it growing tits, making any of my future kids gay, causing global warming, etc., etc.

I can only eat so many chicken breasts, eggs and cans of tuna a day. Is Soy that bad for men that I should not drink 2-3 protein drinks of it a day? It's a whole hell of a lot harder to get enough protein without it.

I am stealing this from Chris McClinch on davedraper.com:

Whey comes from a tit, soy give you tits!

Seriously, why not drink whey or egg protein instead?
Yorkshireman I: Right! I had to get up in the morning, at ten o'clock at night, half an hour before I went to bed, eat a lump of cold poison, work twenty-nine hours a day down mill and pay mill-owner for permission to come to work, and when we got home, our dad would kill us and dance about on our graves, singing Hallelujah!

Whey is a milk byproduct. Every time I've tried it, it went right through me. Same with any of the egg proteins that I've tried.

Kinda hard to pack on weight when all those calories I'm drinking aren't sticking around long enough to be absorbed.

The rumors around the estrogen increase with the use of soy protein are alive and well today. Just remember, they are rumors.

With any supplement, there are side effects. Research the supplement to see if it fits your needs and go from there. If soy is the only way you can get the nutrients your body needs, then soy it should be. A balanced diet is what we are looking for so include it in your eating habits.

Soy is not a "complete" protein, which does make a difference, but the stories about it producing female characteristics are mostly urban legends. If it were that simple, there are people who would buy it by the 50-lb bag, lisp and all <LOL>.

If soy is the only protein that works for you, I would not give it a second thought, but you might need an extra supplement or two to get the complete protein profile.

I also believe I have read an article which claimed that some types of purified whey do not contain any of the stuff that gives lactose intolerant individuals problems.

    Thanks for the link, Phi.

I've read so much conflicting information that I don't know what to believe.

I had been drinking 1-3 shakes a day until I started to read more and more bad stuff about it, so quit taking it. Not sure about the long term effects but I was a lot stronger and had more muscle while using it.

Thanks Pete - and good one about the 50-lb. bag buyers.

Any recommendations on which supplement(s) would help augment what the soy protein lacks.

    Olie, thanks for the links.

Like I said, I have tried numerous whey/casein/egg protein powders, all to no avail. The one protein powder that I tolerated well was Vitamin World's Non-GMO Soy Protein Isolate. I used the plain and mixed it with low-carb orange juice and had no problems.

After reading all the negative reports, I started thinking that is what was holding me back from making more gains in muscle mass. Heck, since I've quit taking it, I've lost mass, strength and energy.

Other than that I still eat a lot of eggs, egg whites, tuna, chicken, fish and some red meat; along with whole grains, fruit and vegetables. I eat very little sweets, junk food or refined flours.

I made my first 6 months of gains on soy protein powder supplements without incident. I only switched to whey because I heard it was a slightly better (more quickly and completely absorbed) protein than soy. After discontinuing the use of soy powder, I continued to eat tofu and edamame with impunity. Since moving to Ireland, my soy consumption has dropped to zero without any perceptible benefit. So, based on my personal experience, I'd say that the anti-soy arguments are over-rated.

Asian males consume a lot of soy, and while they are smaller in stature, they are not effeminine.

    Personally I hate soy.

One nutrition writer said that up to 190 mg of soy per week is actually beneficial for men. It blocks the effects of real estrogen, which we all make.

I'm not a fan of soy, or anything that has to be so processed to be consumable, but I would probably take her advice if I weren't on thyroid replacement. The issue with soy and hypothyroidism is that we cannot regulate the amount of hormone we produce (if we produce any at all). The soy will interfere with the medication. That said, soy will not turn you transgender.

I've heard the same thing. Apparently, the estrogen in soy is a weaker variety than the natural estrogen found in men yet it binds to the same receptors in the body. Sadly, I don't have a source to quote on this one.

I drink soy milk daily and have made good gains with no negative side effects.
I use whey and casien protein though. I mix em wiht the soy milk.
I like using lite soy milk because it contains less sugar carbs and ads a little bit of protein and adds a better consistency to the shakes, I cant stand em in water.

Interesting, I may try some soy, it has to be cheaper than the whey lately.

I read Macrobolic Nutrition by Gerard Dente and he said that soy *blocks* the receptors for the natural estrogen so it's perfectly safe for men to use. I don't have the book handy or I would quote the exact words, it was a library book.

Yeah, that's what I heard. Since the receptor is already locked up with a soy estrogen, it's not available to bind with a regular estrogen.

I wouldn't ask fitty about soy, lol!! I caught hell for eating a bar that had it in it so I stay away from soy all the time. Use eggs white powder, it tastes like ****, but it's better than a poke in the eye!

i was vegetarian for 3 years and soy was my primary source of protein. it provided enough protein for muscle growth--and when i told people i was vegetarian--they found it hard to believe as i was muscular and lean. so it worked for me. i know some will disagree but it served me well when i was not eating animal protein for an extended period of time.

hemp protein was another source--that and nuts. hulled hempseed is tastey, and a good source of a complete protein, comparable to egg protein in quality.
