up to 5-8 lbs a month until you get to a reasonable size (20-40 lbs added) then around 1-2 a month once your fairly big.

Miracles are attested, but what if they're instead some mix of charlantary, unfamiliar states of consciousness, misapprehensions of natural phenomena, and mental illness? No contemporary religion and no New Age belief seems to me to take sufficient account of the grandeur, magnificence, subtlety and intrcacy of the Universe revealed by science. The fact that so little of the findings of modern science is prefigured in Scripture to my mind casts further doubt on its divine inspiration. - Carl Sagan

There have been naturals who put on almost 10 pounds in a month when they first start training and eating properly.

You'll gain fastest when you first start off, it'll slow down though later. I think for a natural, 10lbs of lean muscle a year should be expected, 15 - 20lbs would be a good goal providing you have a superiour routine. I've heard of more than 25lbs of lean mass being gained in a year from reputable people, but even if it was true it would be very rare. Who knows? Maybe you are superman! I'd say don't put limits on yourself numberwise, but just keep in mind the numbers I and others here have given you are good estimates and the limit for most everyone so don't be disappointed when you don't gain 50lbs of lean mass or something like that. Whatever you gain, as long as you do your best you can be happy with it.

how can u tell how much mucles in lbs u gain. when i started i was 160 now im 150 about 5 months later (been training for a year and serious for bout 4 or 5 months). even though i lost weight i gained hella muscle. by bicep is about 2 inches bigger than when i started my forearm is like 3 in bigger. my chest is huge and im vascular on my arms. my bench shot from 130 to 180 and im gettin stronger by the day. so even though i lost weight i still gained muscle. but how do u tell how many pounds of muscle u gain.

A realistic goal would be 10 pounds per year. Keep in mind that's less than 1 lb per month
10 lbs/year x 5 years = 50 lbs. If you started at 165 you would be 215 lbs in 5 years !!!
Anyone who says they can gain more than 10lbs of lean muscle a year is either full of **** or on steroids. (or a newbe )neg reds on sight crew

Many people have done it. Its not common for everyone to gain 20 lbs in a year; lets face it, most of the people in the gym don't know what they are doing or just don't have the drive to do their best in and out of the gym. I'd say most anyone can do it if they apply themselves to the fullest of their ability; but then there are also those that tell themselves and others that they can't do it ^.
Obviously a newbe can put on 10+ lbs in his first 2-3 months, but the gains slow down rapidly after that.
Anyone who can gain 20lbs of lean muscle a year will probably become Mr Olympia in 3-4 years :Pneg reds on sight crew

Maybe I wasn't being clear enough. What I meant was that its unlikely for an experienced trainee to gain more than 10 lbs of LEAN MUSCLE (no fat) per year.

20lbs of lean muscle in a year is possible with an excellent training program and decent genetics. It's hard to tell how much of a weight gain is purely muscle, in most cases some will be fat and water. Your measurements can give you some idea, i.e your biceps and chest numbers going up but your waist staying much the same.

yeah i did get a bit fat with all the eating mostly around the waist area but it doesnt bother me with the amount of muscle i gained was awsome, and i figure eat as much as i can worry about the fat later but im not gonna start cutting all the fat off me till i reach my goal of 220 pounds but yer i dont have a lot of fat just a bit round the waist !!

in the past 10 months iv'e gained 19 pounds and tripled my strength in some areas (such as a 60lb to a 180lb bench). However many of that 19 pounds was muscle, I don't know considering I'm gowing through puberty at the same time. I gained over 2inches in height as well
Based off my studies, a person with good nutrition and excersize can gain 10-12 of PURE muscle in a year. people who say "half a pound a week" are crazy.

There's a big misconception about gains, mainly because when a very new lifter first starts after about 1 -2 weeks they can gain up to 10lbs. They think that's muscle, despite it not showing, so adopt this mentality I GAINED 30LBS OF MUSCLE IN 4 MONTHS AND GOT LEANER.
well it's actually water, or mostly water and glycogen entering the muscles, not actual lean mass.
I think 20lbs of lean muscle mass per year is a great goal to aim for, but in no way expect to fulfill that.
