Protein Shake before & after a workout..too much?

Just wondering if taking a protein shake 45 min prior & right after a workout is too much?

Depends. There is no point in eating a meal an hour before, then drinking a shake, then lifting, then drinking a shake, then making another meal an hour after. However, if you eat breakfast at 8, take a shake before lifting at 11, and can't make a whole meal until maybe 2 or 3, then yea the shake is fine. See what I'm getting at?

You don't even need to do that. I rarely drink shakes. I have a meal about 1.5 hours before I workout, sip on Xtend or Wraath during my workout, then make a big PWO meal with lean protein and starchy carbs about 30 mins after I get home from the gym. Whey is overrated IMO unless you simply cannot stomach a meal or have time to make one. I will drink a shake if I'm lifting between classes or meetings, but I always would rather eat whole food.

I would definitely drink the shake after a workout. But you don't have to have a shake before if you had a solid meal in with decent protein 1-1.5hrs before your workout. i usually workout in mornings b4 class, so I'll have oats, an apple, milk and whey about an hour b4 that, then hit the gym and down my shake of milk, whey and oats with a banana on the side on way to class.

    Friendship b/w women:

    never too much

as long as you last ate 2 hours prior to the protein shake then its fine to do a shake, but honestly you should be consuming some carbs 45 mins to an hour before training. The major misunderstanding is that protein is energy, when its not, it is simply the sustaining block of muscles. Carbs are what allow you to build muscle and provide you with energy for your workouts. Post workout you should definately consume protein within 45 mins of the last weight pushed, however you should try and consume some carbs within 15 mins of last weight pushed. Remember complex carbs are not your enemy and even some simple carbs from natural sources.

I agree. Most of the time i try to eat a small meal 60-90 m, before training. Just after my workout i drink a shake and one hour later i eat another meal.

Right now I'm taking protein in this way.

Morning - Have 2 slices wheat toast and oatmeal. 16oz Skim milk with 3 scoops of Whey protein. Eat a normal lunch. Go to gym around 5:30p, have 16oz glass of skim milk with 3 scoops of protein after workout. I usually eat chicken or tuna for dinner. Am I taking to much protein. I'm new to all this and this web site has been a great help.

    Thanks in advance.

Eh, it depends. If you can't get to a meal for 60 mins or so after lifting, you should have a shake or at least some BCAA's to offset catabolism. 1 scoop of whey then a meal an hour later is fine and still takes advantage of the anabolic window as far as carbs are concerned.

Sounds about right. I was making reference to her 45 minutes pre work-out shake. If she has an hour or longer workout, then total is about 2 hours and fits the digestion rule of thumb and is good.

Ok, I see what you're saying now. Yea, that would work perfect. Shakes with EAA's/BCAA's provided before training are shown to be more beneficial than when taken post-workout as well due to the availability of the amino acids during exercise.

Dunno if you are getting "too much protein" but I would recommend getting some protein from more natural sources, 6 scoops whey a day does sound kind of hefty.

    I.e. oats/pb/cottage cheese/more meats/etc.

Divide your protein into more meals throughout the day.. 3 scoops is totally unnecessary esepecially since ur adding 2 cups of milk to this which is 16g alone.. thats prob over 80g of protein in that single shake .. thats 160 between ur 2 shakes + ur lunch + what you get from incompletes + dinner

eat meals balanced with about 30-40g of protein and aim for that in your shake also.. 1 scoop of whey = 20-25g + ur 16oz of milk is perfectly fine man

    eat more meals..

    i totally disagree.

my preworkout meal is oats and whey in water, one hour before a workout.
i then drink another shake + carbs post workout
then an hour later i have a proper pcf meal.

    eat up!

i dont even know how i found this thread... but

i do it. Mainly, before, because protien shakes dont give you that "stuffed" feeling in the gym.. and after becasue your body is in a catabolic state, and protien in the form of a liquid will help replenish your muscles the fastest right after a workout, where protien in the form of a solid (food) will break down more slowly. But i usually have a meal, 1-1.5 hrs after my post work out shake too..

According to Alan Aragon's literature, you're fine. In fact, you could even do better by taking a shake immediately prior to lifting (taking in protein between exercises has shown to be optimal, as a matter of fact), and then taking one immediately after.

I think someone in here said something about whey being overrated. Not according to research it isn't.

Is it bad to have a protein shake before and right after workout, but then eat dinner 30 minutes later?

Nothing is "bad" per se, but the discussion could be centered around that which is optimal.

I don't have the material in front of me at this time, but Alan provided some excellent research on this topic in his book. Basically, you want to load up on protein and carbs post workout, then wait about an hour or two before taking in another meal.

Yeah, I know, it's a lot of eating, but if you're looking to optimize growth...

Thanks for the reply. My dilemma is that by the time I get back from the gym in the evening it's around 7pm, so I have a protein shake and start making dinner. I get up early and go to bed early so I don't want to wait and eat dinner before I go to bed.
