Buying used equipment: Price of Used Weights

I'm negotiating a deal with a local seller for over 1000lbs of used weights in assorted sizes, along with a few accessories. How much is used weight going for these days?

My experience is that it depends... Doesn't help much, but here goes with a little detail.

If you purchase from a retailer, typical rates for used iron Oly plates runs anywhere between $0.25 and $0.50 /lb. USD. Standard 1" iron can run about the same, but toward the lower end of the scale.

If you purchase from an individual, who knows ?

Note that depending upon how much stock the retailer has, the local demand for plates, and the gross amount you are willing to purchase, you can often strike a good deal.

I've purchased as low as $0.05/lb "new" Oly plates, because the retailer had picked up a ton (literally) of smaller weight plates. I bought 350 lbs of 5's and 2.5's. It was about 4 yrs ago.

I've also picked up used Oly plates quite recently for $0.20.

    Hope that helps !

It seems that almost all of the Play It Again Sports in our area sell used weights for $0.39/pound with two exceptions with one selling at $0.49/pound and one selling standards at $0.29/pound and Olympics selling at $0.44/pound.

I always felt that I got a good deal at anything below $0.30/pound.

As far as weights go, I've never seen anything that could remotely be considered a bargain at Play It Again Sports. I've actually seen some things there that cost the same as buying them new.

The one in my area sells standard and Oly used plates for .30 a pound. I bought six York milled 45lb plates for .30 a lb, cheaper than when I bought them new in the 70's. Prices vary from store to store.

    Hi C Man.

I shop Play It Again all the time. Don't always buy. It depends upon what they have and what they want for it.

I have come away with quite a few bargains. And, I walk away if they won't deal.

I've bought probably 2000 lbs of Oly and standard used there. Standard plates were used for my dumbells. Paid anywhere from about $0.20 to $0.30 / lb used.

In my experience and depending upon what you are going to buy (quantity, gross amount to spend, is there a slow- or - hot market for the item, etc.), they will often negotiate.

I recently bought 2 brand new 300 lb/ Oly sets for $100. They were priced at $149. Yeah, I could have paid $99 at Sports Authority, but I wanted grey without a specific brand, and SA only had their branded black.

I just talked to the manager and was polite about it. I also bought 350 lbs of new Oly plates (5's, 2.5's) for $0.05/ lb. a few years past.

My hip sled was purchased there several years ago too (new). It sat on the floor for almost 6 months. Every few weeks, I'd go in and ask the manager if he would deal. Took six months, but I got it for $450 - and they delivered it for me.

Not sure it would happen in every case, or in every store (they are independent franchises), but it works for me. And... Like I said, if they won't budge, I walk away.

I've done the same at Sports Authority for new as well. Not nearly as successful there at getting a discounted price, but I have done it a couple of times.

I also buy from the classifieds. Definitely worth negotiating there. Almost everyone will bend on the price. More so, if they have not sold the item for a while or it is large and takes up space.

I've also bought new from Web sites (New York Barbells was very good), but the freight can kill you depending upon waht you are looking for and where it has to be delivered to.

I wish management at your Play It Again Sports would talk to management at mine so I could get some deals.

Believe it or not, I can beat your $0.05 deal. At Fitness Experience a couple years ago I got about 90 lbs worth of standard plates for $0.04/lb.
I was there for something else and the salesman mentioned it to me. I just wish I had known about it sooner, because I was only able to get 1.25, 2.5, 5, and 7.5 lb plates, all the 10's were gone.

Buying from classifieds, absolutely a good idea. Except for my bench I've outfitted my entire home gym with used but basically brand new equipment I bought on eBay for roughly 70% off retail price.

Hey - I assumed the AZ meant you were from Arizona. If so, where (if you don't mind my asking)?

I have also bought a lot from EBAY, I just keep the search range within 100-150 miles for pick-up only prices. I got a hack squat machine for $44 in perfect condition right in town.

Depending on the area, the general range for olympic plates are $.25/lb to $.40/lb for used plates. At one time or another i've purchased a few used olympic sets and resold them. The used olympic plates i've picked up sold for $.30/lb.

I have no idea about standard size plates though. The ones that i have were purchased new at a local sporting good store for $.55/lb. My local play it again sports wanted about the same for used plates, so i just went with the new plates. (For some reason, i can never find a good amount of used 10lb standard plates in the classifieds.)

What is the seller asking for the weights?

Do you know the conversion to USD?

Did he send you pictures of the plates? A little surface rust is not a problem if you have the time to clean them up yourself, but be weary of plates that are completely rusted over. Good luck to you.

Works out to about $0.36 USD Cents per pound at todays rate. I have no idea about the condition, no pics, nothing... I think I'm better off buying them new.
