How do Fat Burners work?

I have just bought a fat burner (without ephedra). It does have caffeine.

How do these work? Is it simply using the caffein to speed up the heart to increase metabolism? Is it that simple?

Some of them suppress your appetite

Some of them have a nootropic effect that helps to alleviate cravings and also helps with moderate intensity / extended duration cardio

Some of them work by increasing your Basal Metabolic Rate

There'll likely be other stuff to work with and around the effects of the caffiene if it is worth its salt. Caffiene itself does a few cool things, such as mildy stimulating fat buring hormones (the catecholamines), blocking adenosine ( a relaxant) to "pick-you-up", promoting dopamine etc. Probably more stuff that its too early to try and remember.

Ephedrine is nice for dieting and such, but you don't need it.
