Hi all...
So... Probably a silly question but do sweat suits and saunas help with fat loss through sweating or do they just dehydrate the body?
Thanks

sweat suits work insanely well ( i have a few),..but ONLY in making you sweat/dehydrating you....but, if you think of it this way... your body is 70% water, so the more you sweat out, the less you weigh! hmmm,...but yeah its great for losing that water weight...(i lose about 10-12 lbs per hour , but only for an hour each time i do do it) and the only reason i ever do do it, is because i drank the night before and want to sweat out all the toxins!
good luck

on the contrary NDN, i RARELY drink anyway (alcohol) but, either way, i drink about 2-3 gallons of water per day..i make sure i have atleast 1 to 2 gallons of water before putting a suit on to deplete the toxins/extra water...i DO NOT recommend this as an everyday thing, but to each his own. Either way though, i do recommend, however you want to do it, sweating out any alcohol you've had from the night before as it is catabolic and yada yada yada....but, the most common/correct answer, is JUST DONT DRINK IF YOURE TRYING TO GET IN SHAPE!
-best of luck

this sweat suit also helps you burn a little extra calories.
there is no way in hell if you are doing cardio this isnt going to help you burn extra calories. it has to. alot of people have the wrong idea about a sweat suit. a sweatsuit is an effective sweat aid which uses natural body heat generated from any type of low or intensive high-energy physical exercise to increase perspiration during your work out. This sweat excretion process through perspiration stimulates the entire body, thus helping to rid the body of excess water weight gain, and evenly melts away unwanted body fat! I used to weight 245 now im at 208 and kept the weight off.

If anything a sweastsuit might make you burn less calories. Your body burn cals trying to keep itself warm. If your body temp is already high and you keeep it high in a warm suit, your body is going to actually slow down it's processes in order to cool you down. That's why you burn more cals sitting in a cold room then a hot one, or why cold water burns more cals than room temp. Just that factor probably negates the extra cals you burn by sweating. Overall I'd say the best a sweat suit does is get rid of water weight. However, lipogenesis actually requires h20 for the reaction. No water, no fat loss!
Summation: fat loss>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>weight loss.

Lots of people use it to lose water weight pre-fight for example.
I do sauna every now and then because I love how relaxing it is after lifting..*** Misc Cigar Crew ***

it does work to some extend, because it kinda bottles the heat in, your body has to work extra hard to keep itself cool, thus buring extra calories. also it skyrockets your cardio. I do muay thai, and in my acadamy, several of the trainers will train with sauna suit on, before a big fight, they train like 2 week before hand, once they suit is off, they can last like 1000000000 more rounds before they had it on. but u need to rehydrate yourself very often, or you do more dmg then good. cheers

Heat stress via ******t temperature and exercise (and the external expression via sweating) does have an influence on energy substrate usage patterns and hormonal responses. For instance, GH is an important fat mobilizer and it plays a role in thermoregulation. The more intense the exercise, the more there is typically a need for thermoregulation. So the influence of thermoregulation and exercise on GH both influence post-exercise metabolism and lipolysis (all leading to an increase in overall 24 hour energy expenditure). There needs to be more longer-term research to support this though.
Short term it probably won't make much of a difference however. Chronic practice could be another story.
It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it.

I don't use a sweat suit I mainly use the sauna for the skin and sweating out the impurities.

I love the sauna suit. I use one everyday, but Ive also been trained in using one also. I wouldn't recommend it to everyone though. You've gotta know your limit. It does burn fat as well as water weight. Homeostasis! Your bodies going to burn calories either hot or cold. I'd just rather sweat burning it. It shows alittle more of an accomplishment to sweat anyway

Sweating doesn't cause pimples. Rubbing, touching, etc causes them. Puberty is also the reason, you can't sweat that out. Sweating will remove toxins and such from your body though. Like when you drink the next day you smell liek it in your sweat. I don't beleive in the whole sweating means you are burning calories though. I sweat a ton and it hasn't made me any slimmer. The only thing I think it will help with is losing water weight, which will come right back.

I can tell you it works. I wrestled and thats how i lost alot of my weight. other then running and wrestling of course. but you got to do some extra if you want to cut 12 lbs. ha. I used to sleep in a rubber suit. i'd lose like 3-4 lbs the couple of hours i could stand it. Not very healthy though. I would recommend doing a hiit routine a couple times a week.
sorry didn't really read your post. but it loses alot of water not much fat...well atleast i think..haLast edited by uppercaseC; 05-19-2008 at 12:43 PM.

I agree with 10CITY on this. Haven't used one myself (yet) but my partner does (she's been using it for about 2 years) and she's certainly lost more weight in the past couple yrs than she had before.
She tells me that some people are putting alot more research into Sauna Suits and how well they work for losing weight and the signs so far are pretty promising. Could be that the myths about them get busted. She says that (ok, its a company that sells them, but I guess that they are the ones who want to clear it up the most?) there is a company in the UK who sell over there and here called Swelter who have been looking into it a fair bit and that they have articles on their site about it. Thats what made me buy one, I'm just waiting for it.

I started LMAO when I realized this is a 6 year old thread! Anyway, I do have first hand experience with one of these suits from when I wrestled back in the day, and they are very dangerous....Now first off, I was probably pretty dehytrated before I even put the thing on (because we ran on low fluids all of the time instead of dieting smart), but anyway to make a long story short I stopped sweating and ended up suffering from heat exhaustion. I had to miss the next month of wrestling because of it. I had never made my coach that angry before but he cut my suit into about 100 pieces. Point being is they are stupid and only dehydrate you. Even if they did magically raise your metabolism a tiny little bit, is it worth the risks? There are no quick fixes....Calorie deficit

Wow!
Most of you have some good muscle tone an weight but im still scratching my head wondering why only a few really understand the true benefits of a sauna suite yes they can be dangerous but they do help burn fat when you are working out. Your body sweats when you sweat that is your body's natural defense to keep its self cool correct... when you do this your body burns whats called water weight.... if you continue to do this you will also burn fat an I mean real body fat its not rocket science to understand how the body works try jump roping with a sauna suite 3 3min rounds or 5 5 min rounds same with sparring or doing cardio do one activitie with a sauna suite 3 times a week my preference would be jump rope or bag work or sparring if ure not a fighter jump rope its easy fun and most of all IT WORKS BURN THAT FAT RIGHT OFF!!! GETPAID$......ps most gyms I been to crank the heat
