training a female, focus on heavy lifting?
Instead of cardio etc??
She is petite and wanting to just get more tone. I suggested to (and mildly forced) her to do a lot of compound lifts, bench, legpress etc, and some back negatives (our first goal is to achieve a single chin-up). I dont want to make her do ****loads of running or squats at the moment because it will put her off
In terms of body composition, I am gambling that the n00b effect + heavy lifting will help her see some positive change, and when she feels that it will encourage more hamster-wheel behaviour

the bigger the better
You know what? I think you've got the right idea!! Way to go!

...and your point WAS????
Sounds damn good to me.
It's so refreshing to see someone training a woman w/o having her do hours of endless cardio with the occasional use of 2lb. pink DB's.
Bravo!

Where the heck were you when I still trusted trainers enough to ask their advice?

Bingo!! Thank GOD a man who understands that women need bone density, strength and power as a health thing and doesnt throw her on a cardio machine and make her do jumping jacks.
Being different is NEVER easy...

i have similar goals to your client and as a newbie, that's what my fitness plan consists of. i'm building muscle and enjoying it (80% of the time!). a few short sessions of cardio give me a nice boost in endrophins and energy.

The Mighty Devourer
Blah! Squat! Squats will hit those legs and glutes, what most women who are first getting into this gig want to work on! Just like a male lifter, if they are demotivated by putting forth a relatively small amount of effort, they probably aren't going to stick with it anyway.

She will appreciate your methods when she sees those results!!

I encourage everyone, man, woman, child, or dog, to train heavy. If you want to lose weight or improve your cardio fitness, that's great, but get out of the weight room (lifting light is a waste of time) and go for a jog in the park.

What's wrong with squats? As long as she's doing heavy weight/low reps, that's exactly what you want her doing.
