The problem with mercury is the potential for long-term neurological disorders. Remember the mad hatter from Alice in Wonderland? Hat makers used to go nuts because they worked with mercury while making hats. Long-term exposure took its toll.

    Eat Tuna

The FDA warning was for pregnant women and small children, if you are neither then you have nothing to worry about. The warning was also for fresh caught fish not canned fish.

Aren't most canned tuna from "fish farms" and not actually from the ocean, unless specified on the can??? They get the mercury from pollutants in the ocean.

Mercury is a neurotoxin and it builds up inside your body and does not get degraded or removed easily. Yet, I eat a can everyday....

    Read this: http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/mroussell5.htm
It suggests slowly increasing the number of cans of tuna you eat, if you intend to eat a lot.

Also from that article, as I struggle to understand, NAC is an antioxidant that helps eliminate Mercury from you system. Glutathione is a precursor to NAC which is abundant in fruit and vegetables, especially avocados.

I saw a study in catfish that found that farm-raised had mercury levels just as high, if not higher.

I prefer to play it safe with my health and try to limit myself to fish once per week. Chicken is cheap, lean, and can be cooked in large batches to save time.

With that logic, if I were neither a child nor a woman, I could eat mercury and have nothing to worry about.

The mercury content is only high enough to possibly effect small children or the fetus of a pregnant women.

Is there something done to canned fish that reduces or eliminates mercury?
Canned fish have stricter guidelines. Fresh, ocean caught fish are the only examples that would apply. After saying that , no one has ever been mercury poisoned from canned fish. This has been discussed in length on this forum.Search

Try some salmon instead. I tried a pouch of pink salmon that I've feared opening for 6 months and all I can say is WOW. It was so freakin' GOOD. No fishy smell or taste. Just a mild, buttery, melt-in-your-mouth taste. Tasted a lot better than tuna.

Ugh, I tried that pouched salmon and it was fishy and nasty. I love my chunk light tuna, either the Starkist pouch or lately canned in water. It's way cheaper too.

A few summers ago i did the Dave draper Tuna and water cutting diet... except i took things to extremes like always. I ate about 7 cans of tuna a day for 2 weeks. I got shredded, went to the beach and ended up getting sicker than i ever had been in my life. It was the stomach flu times 1000. My whole body ached and i was sitting in the beach house wearing 2 sweatshirts shorts and a pair of sweat pants over them. From that summer on i have limited my tuna intake to maybe 3-4 cans a week.
