Ok, so I'm not 35 yet but getting there, plus I would prefer a mature answer. I've been working out on and off for several years and seriously for the last year, have had good gains, now for some reason , my hands will just "fall asleep", you know the feeling like pins all over your hands, they will do this whenever, hanging down, lying down, typing whenever. Has anybody experienced this before and could this be a result in the growth of the muscles in my arms pinching nerves or blood vessels. Thanks.

I'm 99.9% certain you've got Carpel Tunnel.
Edit: Message me if you need some more info as I had to get surgery for this, 1 year ago.Last edited by TheReason; 01-15-2006 at 10:43 PM.

Your symptoms do sound like carpel tunnel.
What has helped my carpel tunnel are wrist curls and reverse wrist curls.
Also you might wish to get some wrist braces, I don't know the actual name, but they have a bent piece of plastic or metal in them, to wear at night, to prop the wrist. Drugstores carry them.

I had the same problem when I first started lifting (at about 33) and it went away after about 6 months of continual gym time. As my foreams developed the numbness lessened until it went away. I don't recomend ignoring the problem like I did though, best to have a doctor look check it out.

I had a similar problem about 3-4 years ago, still have it to some degree. I would definately look at your cervical (neck) region. That's where my problem was stemming from. Neck problems can look and feel like arm/hand problems. Try these: Hold your hand and wrist up towards the ceiling. Take a couple fingers from the opposite hand and tap firmly on your wrist region 5-10 times. Now try flexing your wrist down (fingers towards forearm) and make a fist. Now open and close your hand 20-30 times. If you have carpal tunnel syndrom, these two activities should bring about the symptoms. If these don't, your problem may not lie in the wrists. BTW, I'm no health care expert. These were just tests that I was given, and since they are not dangerous, I thought I'd pass them on.

My hands fall asleep, mostly at night, but other times occasionally. I just tried guitarlifter's test, twice, and had no symptoms. I guess the problem is in my neck. It does get stiff and tense, and will occasionally crack.

Interesting thread. I thought I was the only one who experienced weird sensations in my arms/hands.
I know the reason my hand/arm falls asleep at night....because I sleep with my head on my arm (pillow between).
But I occasionally experience my forearm and hand going numb after I've awaken and am shaving (the arm holding the electric razor). It hasn't happened in several months now, but I always assumed I was pinching a nerve/blood vessel when my arm was bent like that....although I knew it wasn't normal. I use a PC all day at work, but I never would've thought of CTS.
