Recently came back to faith, need Christian advice
I recently decided to come back to my Christian faith after a spending about half a year or more on my own. I want to bodybuild too, but I have received criticism from fellow brothers and sisters for wanting to pursue this hobby. I have been told it's too narcissitic. I understand that can come up, but I think there are many benefits to this sport too. Such as, getting in better health, increasing strength, and developing discipline. But, on the other hand I do see that this could become an obsession. It seems that I feel like if I don't get "jacked" I'm a failure and not good enough for anything life has to offer (like a wife). And, I want this to be something for God's glory but not out of the sense I need to do this to be accepted or handsome for people.
I'm just wondering how you guys think I could go about this? I also wanted to somehow incorporate bodybuilding and Christianity together. Like, instead of using Ronnie Coleman quotes to motivate me, maybe like some bible verse on fitness? Or christian music instead of secular music?
Thanks,
Chilaha

hello everyone
i didn't know there were two christian bb threads going--i think this is the one i used to post in.
been a while. hope everyone is doing well!
do you all believe in miracles? like everyday ones?
I do. Something quite amazing happened today, and it can only be explained by God.
God's mercy is unfathomable, and may He help me to be as compassionate and forgiving as He is, with me.

hey all
I'm in need of a good job
I've been unemployed for a few months now and getting depressed.
please pray for a good one (preferably in my field so I can CEO10k/erryday)
also,
started seeing an awesome Christian woman the last month or so, and need some wisdom & guidance through that. (seriously, she's ticked all my boxes and more)
Openness, no baggage getting in the way & no awkwardness if it doesn't work out. (we're in the same church and homegroup).
appreciated!

My great-great uncle boris passed on yesterday (mentioned him on page 12) . Miss that crazy old man, but I will see him again.
Might start wearing a cross he gave me when I visted him, again. I don't really like wearing jewerly but might do it remember him for a while. (oddly enough he never wore one)

I am a Christian as well. There is a lot of darkness in the gym (pride, self-obsession, drug use, etc) so it's great to know that there are others out there who want to lift to the glory of God. I have a long way to go in transforming my body, but as someone who has lost a lot of weight (130 lbs) I try to use my experiences to encourage others that Luke 1:37 says with God nothing is impossible.

Yes, Paul was talking to the Corinth, but The bible has many teachings, and if this is how he feels it applies to his life then in all fairness as Christians we have no right to correct that. I believe whole heartily whether its sexual, mental, or anything else my body is still his temple and I shall not do anything to Defame a temple of God's.

i was just gonna bump this...nice to see new faces.
God has blessed me in many ways...if you follow Him, He'll bring the right people...the right situations...the right everything...into your life, beyond your most amazing dreams. He's simply awesome. My words of thanks could never be enough for all He's done for me.

At first I wasn't glorying God in the progress I have made with my body. I took it as credit for my own doing. I had strict discipline, and I was doing things right. Now as I have hit some obsticles in my life, I have recieved a deeper understanding of who Christ really is. He isn't some spiritual being that is beyond our reach. He is right there with us for when we give him our life, complete surrenderence to Him, He will never leave us or forsake us. I now am trying to glorify God in all areas of my life. I now give glory to God for the successes I have gotten for it truly is by His grace I was successful.
Ps. Something I learned not too long ago about Grace. maybe it will help some other's here who are possibly questioning the Grace of God. When Paul talks about the "Grace" of God in the bible. It was not a religious term in any way in their society. Rather very secular Ie worldly. In their culture they used a client and patron system. The patron was someone who had the resources available to equip others that were unable to accomplish things. The patron would see potential into the client. The client in their culture was someone who did not have the ability to carry out tasks, or did not have the resources available. So the Patron would Equip the Client, he would freely give them the resources to empower him to carry out their full potential. I hope this makes sense. In terms of the "Grace" of God. Grace is an empowerment to do things we are unable to do on our own. If you think about this, it truly is powerful I know I cannot carry out His will for my life on my own.

Good thread to see here. Im a christian as well.
Why do I do this weightlifting thing for the last 34 years with all its ups and downs life has handed me? Because each time I came back stronger. NEVER GIVE UP. Gym life is about more than muscles getting bigger and weights going up. Its wisdom discipline dedication humility you name it.

It's cool to see that there are christian in such a cocky hobby/profession. I try to stay humble ,but it's hard to in such a prideful area. This thread is going to definitly help me stay humble in the coming days. Hopefully we can have some good conversations on here.

[QUOTE=Chilaha;1034248083]It seems that I feel like if I don't get "jacked" I'm a failure and not good enough for anything life has to offer (like a wife). And, I want this to be something for God's glory but not out of the sense I need to do this to be accepted or handsome for people.

Please don't think that having a good body is the only thing a woman looks for in a man.
I have seen two unhealthy people marry and get fit together. It's so cool.
Good looks come and go with age. It's good to marry someone you feel comfortable with. The bible says be evenly yolked in the faith. Marry someone who has the same values, faith and interests as you. It helps the relationship to last longer. Marry someone who you can connect with and be yourself. That is a blessing. Marry someone you love and don't worry about what your friends think about the person. You are the one who will be committed to that person for the rest of your life.

For me body building is about a mind-body connection. True Christianity is about a mind-God connection. Body building helps us to have a God-Body connection that leads to discipline, self-control, patience, positive attitude, focus, fasting, cleansing, meditating, prayer life, faith and endurance to say the least. Some of which include Christian qualities called the fruit of the spirit.
---------------
Let's be real people, we are physical beings and need to be good stuarts of our bodies. Many people find healing from serious diseases through exercising and eating right. I'm tired of Christians who keep complaining about being sick and do nothing to take care of themselves. Are they being good stuarts? Are they grateful to God for the bodies that God gave them to live in? Are they combining faith and works to see God heal their bodies?
God has healed me from several physical ailments through body building, eating right, prayer and proper fasting.

This may be true. However, they're many examples of warriors in the Holy Bible. Warriors like Sampson, David, Deborah, Saul, Joshua etc. The Bible is full of paradoxes. These were men and women of great valor, strength and honor. Their courage helped others, defended a nation and is remembered until this day and examples of the faith.
Why do Christians think that we have to be wimps? Strength, justice, honor, courage, confidence are gifts from God. By the grace of God we can body build. For if God wanted, you could have gotten into a car accident today and end up paralyzed. Then you would appreciate the body that you have.
How can you love your neighbor well, if you don't know how to love yourself?

Good comments SenoraLizzol. Also, Jesus said to love your neighbour as yourself, so you need to love yourself first too. You've got to love your own body and look after it, without obsessing over it. I helped someone this morning struggling up the stairs with a very heavy suitcase. I stopped to help and carried it up for them - they thought it was a two person job, but hey, I've been working out!
