Depends on where. There are certain rules in place in certain cities, such as Hoboken, NJ, where the average garbage man makes less than $26,000. Other places, like Miami and Manhattan, the average garbage man can make upwards of $60,000 due to hazzards.
I'm not 100% on Miami/NYC, but Hoboken is accurate.

pretty sure they work a 40hr hour week like everyone else...
why would you think they only work one day?
as far as what they make, may depend on where and who they work for...should be something on the ole google machine... average annual salary of garage men

Here in canada, they can make up to 100,000$ a year, and they do work 40 hours if not more, doing 5 cities a week.

u dont need a degree, but u make alot, base salary in ontario is around 65k and its unionized so full benefits plus they get yearly raises, it pays well for the work, but who wants to do it honestly.

I wouldn't mind doing something more physical for a change, sitting in the same chair in the same cude on the same phone 10 hours a day really wears you down mentaly

When I was young i was a garbage man, ( sanitary engineer). I worked how ever long it took us to complete our route that day. If we worked for 12 hours , then that is what we did. But sometimes we worked 4 hours and got paid for 8. So it works out nice.
Hourly wage was roughly 18.00 an hour. I was 18 at the time and going back a bit.
I really did enjoy the physical activity, it was the odor that killed me. Especially going to the landfill and dumping it there. You walk in the garbage as you control the dump.
I remebr sometimes when a big mess was found the home owner left a case of beer or something for us to have.
Christmas was interesting. We would find bottles of wine and gift cars laying on top of the heap addressed to " the garbage men" Hahahaha....

I can't see a local garbage man travelling from City to City, can you?
Anyway, I didn't realise they did different local routes, my mistake, the life of a garbage man isn't something I look into regularly.
EDIT: And the reason I assumed they only worked once a week was because over here garbage day is on a Thursday so you put all your garbage out by your front door Wednesday night.

this goes to show that in america...even if you royally **** up in your high school years, as long as you get your diploma, you can still make it. Try that in any other country.

hahah you couldnt possibly do the entire route of a city in one day, thats why different parts of a city have different garbage days
