This is my first post and as such some of you guys might be skeptical. But new to this board does not necessarily mean being a newbie.
Let me explain. I am doing graduate work at MIT as a food technologist. I am an avid lifter and am very well versed in sports nutrition and training. I frequent the different boards every so often but generally have little time to post or respond.
I have been seeing some people promote glycerol monostearate as some remarkable new cell volumizer or powdered glycerol. Let me emphatically and I mean emphatically state that this is not true. Actually, this type of thing angers me greatly as it is about the furtherst from the truth that you can get. I work with this stuff everyday and know what I am talking about.
Let me give you the lowdown on glycerol monostearate (GMS).
GMS is what is known as a monoglyceride. You might recognize this because a great deal of foods on the market contain mono- and di-glycerides. In fact, GMS is the main mono glyceride used in food. It is nothing special and you probably consume a considerable quantity of it every day.
Let me also state that GMS is not partly a fat and partly a carb. It is a fat! Point blank! It is labeled as a fat and the FDA considers it to be a fat. In fact it is considered a saturated fat and not something I would consider purposely consuming for the heck of it.
Let me also state that GMS is NOT a powdered form of glycerol. Whoever said this is again 100% wrong. GMS is a fat. All fats have a glycerol backbone with one, two or three fatty acids attached. This is glycerol with one stearic acid fatty acid attached. From these people's logic, it would be like consuming olive oil and calling it a form of liquid glycerol. Nonsense.
Listen to me people. I know what I am talking about here. This stuff will do you no good except make you fat! That is the point blank truth. It does nothing more than consuming lard since lard is mainly stearic acid and glycerol. Truly this is it. Ask these people to supply one study showing it does anything. The studies do not exist. I am passionate about this yes because I know I am right and I know what I am talking about. This is nonsense and it is wrong to tell people things that aren't true.
Do yourself a favor and stay away from this stuff. You will save money and look better (unless you want to get fat!).
