I called our insurance company today to check and see if our life insurance went through and they said he was denied because he had very, very, very high levels of protein in his urine. He has been at work all day so I havent gotten to talk to him about it but is it something we should be worried about or is it just because of his nutrition (he eats so much protein).
On a side note I was pissed because I was to short to quality.. okay who has heard of that one?

I don't know too much about how the protein got there (i.e if there is something not right or it is just b.c of his diet) but I do remember when I was pregnant, they tested every time I went to the OB to see if I had protein in my urine- I was not eating an abudance of it at the time so I would think it wouldn't have anything to do with that.
Google it, see what you might come up with.

It doesn't have anything to do with the amount of protein you eat. It sounds like there's something wrong with his kidneys...under normal circumstances you don't urinate protein. If you are, you are in need of medical care, which is why he was denied. Life insurance co's aren't going to invest in people who are ill.

Proteinuria. That is what large amounts of protein in the urine is called. He is a body builder so pray that his protien is Transient Proteinuria which is caused by heavy excercise and is benign. Usually though this means the protein level is small...you said large. So now what needs to happen is he needs to get to a doctor. They will determine what kind of protein, how much, and do a full workup of his history. I pray for you it is not kidney disease.

absolutely - there should never be protein in your urine - any sign of this is bad. The reason why it doesn't come via urine is because the protein molecules are too large to pass through the smaller filters in the Kidneys. However if for some reason the filter is damaged the protein is allowed to pass.
Protein in the urine can be a marker of almost any type of kidney disease. These are the most common :
High blood pressure
Infection
Reflux nephropathy - this means that urine passes back up from the bladder towards the kidneys, instead of coming out of the body
Diabetes
Glomerulonephritis - Glomerulo- refers to the glomeruli, or the tiny filters in the kidney, and nephritis means inflammation in the kidney.
Minimal change nephritis - The combination of the kidneys leaking a lot of protein (see proteinuria) and the body retaining so much salt and water that there is swelling of the hands, face or ankles is called nephrotic syndrome
Yeah unfortunately if you already have a condition then getting insurance to cover it will be impossible
OP - you said you were too short to qualify - they shouldn't deny you insurance based on your height.Last edited by Mindi911; 01-16-2008 at 01:49 PM.

Never heard of them denying insurance because you're too short.. and you're not that short....
If there is some sort of health problem it should still possible to get insurance with some sort of exclusion on it... this is what I need to get.... they don't like insuring people who've had brain tumours... and yet I was able to get insurance from the same company that had paid out on a critical illness policy... I got life insurance to cover a new mortgage 2 years post op... but it had exclusions... but also with the exclusions it also meant that it wasn't ridiculously expensive... because sometimes what they will do is load the premium... I pay less for my life insurance than my husband... we got our policies at the same time, he's never been ill etc but is 5 years older than me...Getting there slowly.... and slowlier
OK... so all my stats are rubbish at the moment...
DL - 220lbs.... finally... still aiming for 330....

Update
Well we still arent sure. He is going to go to the dr. but my moms friend (a dr) said it may have to do with an issue he has. He has HFI and can not eat anything with Fructose in it. His body cant handle fruit or table sugar. So mostly all he eats is Protein. It causes liver issues so he has to get it checked out. I will keep you posted.
