Bench Grip
One Freshman I know, benches w/ his hands open, his thumb is still away from his head, he just doesn't close his hand, is there any logical reason that weould help him bench more doing this. He said he's not using any strength to close his fists so he can bench more. and he benched 240 Ithink when they maxed the other day. I saw him get 265 during the summer. I was just curious as to wha tyou guys thought about this.

Well put.
Try to squeeze something without flexing your biceps. In his theory, you can put more energy into your forearm muscles. Now flex your biceps. The grip is a whole lot stronger. To get the most power, flex everything from your toes to your teeth.

Pretty much...
If you read any article on the net about bench form, it will tell you to squeeze your whole entire body, keeping it completely tight.
Deadlift on the other hand, I cradle the weight in my fingers (and I don't even have long fingers) and never have any grip issues.

Most people advocate actually trying to tear the bar apart in fact. Open hands is not safe because what if the barbell starts to roll, how are you going to stop it?

Easy - you just stop it with your face

Yea that's why I wanted your opinion, cuz I just read a day or two ago about how you're supposed to flex every muscle in your body while benching. and don't worry, I won't try benchin like that.

physics 101
it boils down to basic physics. the tighter your grip. the less lateral movemant the bar will have during its ascent. that means more energy will be directed upwards through the bar.

all you who think open grip is worthless try this (with someone your own size) have a person stand about an armlength in front of you extend your arm and place your wrist on thier shoulder palm towards thier face with a closed fist now tell the person to use both hands to pull down on your arm while you try to keep it strait then do it again only this time do it with your hand open
also if the bar starts to slip you will be able to grip it in time (although it will not do any good once a bb starts going out of your hand its gone)
i would never bench this way but there is alot more ppl than you think who do
