Day 5 and still not in ketosis.

I have been keeping my carbs under 30 grams a day, and the past 2 days have been under 20.

Also during the past 2 days I upped my fat% to around 70%

I am still not testing positive on the keto strips, and still don't have bad breath. What are the other ways to tell?

This is the average macro's over the 5 day period.

    grams cals %total
    Total: Calories 2272
    Fat: 152 1370 61%
    Sat: 53 475 21%
    Poly: 18 161 7%
    Mono: 49 439 20%
    Carbs: 37 104 5%
    Fiber: 11 0 0%
    Protein: 192 768 34%
    Alcohol: 0 0 0%

I am not really sure why I am not in ketosis....

Is there any carbs in green tea packets? I have been drinking lots of green tea.

Also, on the first 2 days I had 32 oz of those diet green tea bottles, which I learned today has aspartane in it... could that be the reason???

It could definitely be aspartame. Also i'd recommend the first week upping your fats to around 75%. Lol I've been at around 80% fat for the last few weeks and I'm not losing any muscle only getting 120g of protein...and I have a decent amount of muscle. It's my first time going that low with protein so it's rather weird.

Aspartame knocks me out of ketosis. Splenda and saccharin do not.

Good to hear that splenda doesn't.... I am going to make some of the foods in the keto recipe section soon, so I bought a bunch of splenda.

I do drink a ton of liquids throughout the day.... I will try testing tommorrow right when I wake up.

yep, some people really react to the artifical sweetners and what not. It's possible its the tea. Keep your carbs under 20, stay well hydrated, and eat plenty of fats it will come. Its basic science!!

Tea bags themselves won't kick you out. And yes, change your ratios to 80% fat 20% protein until you know you're in. Lose the artificial sweeteners for now (during induction). Post the rest of your diet so we can see if you're going wrong anywhere else.

I appreciate the help guys. Doesn't the induction only suppose to take 2 days? Or is this common for the very first time trying to get into ketosis?

I failed the pee test again this morning......

    anyway my diet.
    Lots of green tea bags
    eggs
    bacon
    olive oil
    spinach
    broccoli
    flax seed
    various types of steak
    burgers
    pork loins
    roasts
whey protein shakes (has sugar in it........)
cottage cheese every night before bed (has 3g of sugar in it... is it possible this is kicking me out of ketosis each time?!?!)
    fish oil caplets
    multivitamin
branched chain amino acids supplement (this has maltodextrin as one of the ingredients... and it says "add an insignificant amount of carbs")
    sausages
    pepperoni
    deli ham
    cheddar cheese

And that's about all I have been eating.

I think I'd skip the cottage cheese, the only thing I eat that has more than 1g or trace amounts of carbs in it are nuts (peanuts, pb, and almonds) and I do so very sparingly and usually in the middle of the day so I can be sure I burn off any of those carbs before I get to bed. Everything else looks fine, maybe the strips are expired? Did you have a foggy head at anytime this week? That's a good sign that you're entering ketosis for the first time.

I just bought the strips a few days ago and they don't expire until 2010.

Actually yeah, on the second day, and then yesterday I felt LIGHTHEADED, is that what you mean by foggy headed?

That could just be due to my massive lacking of carbs, though, right?

When I felt foggy headed it was like it was hard to concentrate and I felt like I was in a daze. I was bumping into things and acting sorta clumsy.
I don't think I really felt light-headed per se, but I guess it could be similar.

It's definitely the lack of carbs, but it's the lack of carbs that gets you into ketosis. I felt like that for a day, then the next day I noticed the tell-tale metallic taste in my mouth.

lose the deli ham, cottage cheese (seriously man, have some pepperoni and cheese before bed, much more tasty ) and depending when and how many whey shakes you're taking could be kicking you out.

again...I posted this in your log.

    your eating to much protien.

try getting down to 100-120 grams a day..and maybe lower ur calories by 200 or so for while.

    macros for you:

    160 grams fat.
    100 grams protien
    20 grams carbs

thats roughly 1900 cals..if u want to go to 170 grams of fat thats fine.

eat that for a week and you will be in deep ketosis

There should be no problem with deli meats (Usually). Just make sure it's not
'honey' ham or anything with sugar in it. Personally i drink whey everyday and it doesn't effect me, drinking a zero carb whey right now.

What's the name of that zero carb whey shake? I couldn't find any that had no carbs. 2 was the lowest I found.

I finally did get into ketosis yesterday!

What should my macros be for maintaining ketosis now? Can I up my carbs to 50g a day?

Can I keep having the whey shakes post workout?

As I understand it, induction last two to three weeks, that's the period where your body is getting used to using fat for fuel. You shouldn't raise your carb count until after that. Personally, I'm in my second week and planning to go one more week after this one, do a 36 hr carb up, then go back to 20g or less again. If I were to raise it up to 50g a day carbs, what kind of carbs are ok to add? Low GI Fruit? more nuts?

Personally, I'm in my second week and planning to go one more week after this one, do a 36 hr carb up, then go back to 20g or less again. If I were to raise it up to 50g a day carbs, what kind of carbs are ok to add? Low GI Fruit? more nuts?
I'd like to eat more nuts, more veggies, hopefully not have to worry about having 8g dextrose post workout..

Use splenda in my tea? Stuff like that.

Mainly more veggies and nuts, though.

I didn't know induction lasted 2-3 weeks. I am going to be done with keto after week 4.. heh

I've been using splenda already, only like a packet a day but I don't see any difference with/without it. I would say you don't need to wait to add splenda to your tea.

Some people NEVER register on the strips but end up having great success on this diet.

you want a bit of carb in your protein shake to help push into the cells. 2 is just fine

preparing for my carb up day..

I started my ketogenic diet on Jan. 8th, and I first entered into ketosis according to the strips on Monday of this week, the 14th.

I am planning on starting my carb up day on Friday or Saturday. I am going to do a lower body day Friday and upper body on Saturday.

Since i've only just got into ketosis on Monday can I still do the carb up day this weekend?

Is there any workout guidelines for the carb up day? (do you want to be lifting during it? or does it not really matter?)

For future reference in regards to getting into ketosis...

    Doing the following helps me get into ketosis in under 36 hours;

    1. Meat, cheese, water. That's it. No sweet stuff, no fancy recipes, sauces, no veggies of any kind. Meat, cheese, lots of water.

    2. Intense low weight, high rep full upper body workout followed by 40+ minutes of mid intensity cardio.

    3. The next day I'll work my legs with high reps and low weights and then do another 40+ minutes of mid or low intensity cardio.

    Abs both days.

By that night I'll be beat to crap but I'll be in ketosis.

-the longer that you do keto the quicker you get back into it, it's the first time that's frustrating. that's why it's good to go a full 14 days before a carbup - you want to make sure that your body has switched to burning fat for energy.

veggies are a very important part of this diet, except you can't eat stuff with a lot of starch or sugar; corn, carrots, plantains, onions. you can eat salads, spinach, broccoli, cauliflower, mushrooms, spaghetti squash, eggplant.

    good luck!

Some good advice here on getting into ketosis.

Remember that supplements can help get into ketosis faster. Supplements like r-ala helps get into keto combined with the eating, and training.
