    ^^^ What he said.

    It's not a "pushup" at all - it's a military/shoulder press, you're just upside down using bodyweight.

well it is a "pushup" in that you're pushing yourself up, just vertically. Anyway, yes, delts and tris, but abs do more stabilizing work than you'd imagine.

These are by FAR the best shoulder exercise I have ever done. It is just too bad adding weight is damn near impossible with this exercise. I always prefer body moving through space exercises to their freeweight counterparts.

Yup lats are very important for stabilisation during overhead pressing. The handstand push up is the poor mans answer to the military press And to up the intensity what i do is i have a backpack full of sand which i use to add extra weight, the backpack has one of those belts which strap around the waist, this stops the bag from sliding off during the exercise.

we do these A LOT in gymnastics... we have a little mini set of parallel bars that are like a foot high, and we just have a someone hold our legs so we can keep good form..they dont help at all...in fact..if you get really good at these, you can have the other person give a little pressure, so its harder

I prefer jackknife pushups on a Swiss ball to handstand push-ups. I feel like I can concentrate on my shoulders more this way. It's hard to keep balance too.

Jackknife push-ups' demonstration starts at 9:35 min.

    What vertical pushups work

    Delts, traps, lats, triceps (somewhat)

At 52 I can pound out 25 in my first set. When I was 30, I could do 72 of these in 3 sets. It takes a different kind of strength to do these.
