Depends on the distance of the race. Most people say 2 tenths, I've seen a much bigger deviation though.

Runing hand vs laser is a huge distance, last year when i was at 205 lbs i ran a 4.73 40 on a hand and then ran a 4.89 40 on a laser. Now at all combines for football there is only lasers.

In our state we have the conversion of adding .24 of a second to convert any hand-time to FAT.

But that's for a track where you add in reaction time from the beginning of the race and the end.

I think for a 40, (if I remember correctly) you start off on your own. So that takes out the reaction time when you start (in a hand time). So for the 40, I think it would be a .12 - .14 difference.

I hope that made sense. But then all that is ruined when you have a really good hand timer haha.

Why would taking out reaction time make it make the time faster? Reaction time adds to your time total.

Theres a big difference. Guys from my school that are training for their pro days told me that you have to specifically prepare for the laser time. Hand time will always be better. My RB went to an all-star game where they do all the tests in front of scouts. He ran a 4.45 hand timed but a 4.81 laser.

That's pathetic timing from Coach Quicktrigger. There's no excuse for having nearly half a second in between the two times.

I was timed by laser timing and hand time and had a .3 difference. Sometimes I think the laser method is a bit unfair if one has not prepared for it. I think my times would have been closer, but we were working on tecnhique when I was timed on the laser. I would guess the average difference in .2, but it's completely different anywhere you go...there is always some little variation.

4 coaches did the hand time and it was an average of their times. For somebody that has never ran the laser before a big difference can be expected. Speed schools train different techniques. Im sure this guy will have a much better time at his pro day since he will have trained for it.

I don't get what you guys mean by "there's a big difference between running with a laser and being hand-timed". The laser is just a gate system with the start being initiated by hand upon the athletes first movement, unless you are being tested with a pressure sensor start system. However, the NFL/NIKE/SPARQ/RIVALS Combines are all tested using a laser-gate system. There really shouldn't be a big difference between the two.
