I have big quads and have that area of my quad decently developed(though not as lean as yours) but I think you are wrong about it "setting athletes apart from normal BBer folk"....if anything thats usually hamstring developed or glutes....lots of folks build their quads up.
Front squatting might help you...or a machine hack squat.

Try barbell hack squats.
