I I think i'm gaining muscle of a calorie deficit??

    Hi guys.

I had previously lost 110lbs over a space of 1.5 years or so, im now 230lbs and im doing alot of heavy lifting. What i've noticed in the last few weeks is that, even though i'm eating very clean, and in deficit i'm maintaining and even slightly gaining. Now this comes as a suprise because i'm below maintenance cals, so is this some sort of super human newbie gains!

p.s i have been on bodybuilding.com from day 1 of my weight loss, alot of you guys on this forum have been a great help. thank you

I have the same problem. I've lost 100+ pounds over the last 3 years and started lifting weights about 6 months ago. I try not to be scale obsessive but it's hard when you've lost that much weight to see the scale going up. I know muscle weighs more than fat and all that.....It's just a numbers thing. But i've been dieting hardcore again the last couple months and same thing is happening to me...my weight is still slowly increasing. I must still be gaining a lot of muscle as i'm sure during my big weight loss that I lost a lot of muscle in the process. I only wish I had started lifting weights when I started losing weight instead of waiting until now.

    Newbie gains. Its not uncommon.

    You'll eventually plateau.

Try to keep in mind that the mirror and how your clothes fit are a true representation of your body - the scale is only a number. If you did no muscle maintenance while losing weight, then yes, you did lose some muscle. Let it rebuild back up, and in the end the more muscle you build, the better off you will be since it will add to your calorie burning power.

Transformed my body the old fashioned way.
    -Now to transform it again

Remember every body is different, what works for one person, doesn't have to apply to you - experiment and find what does work.

I have been lifting for over 3 years and just know began to follow a lean diet to start losing the bf.I have been doing this since Mid Oct. I have gone from 255 to 233. All while gaining strength in every exercise.
So just being a newbie isnt the only way this happens.

Congrats for all your success you should be proud of yourself.

gaining strength does not equate to gaining muscle.
I've gained and lost over 100lbs more times than any man alive should. Do as I say and not as I do.

Short term sure. But if you continue to add strength over time sure it does.

Put a man an an island with a bench a bar and 2 45 plates he can supper set compound set and gaint set all he wants.
But you take that same guy and give him unlimited weights and i will show you one big gilliagan.Or something like that. Got that from DC.

I always follow the principle progressive overload. Its never failed me.
If you show me someone who went from a 135lbs bench to a 315lbs bench and i will gaurantee he gained muscle.

But i understand what your saying if you mean for a short period of time like during a cut etc.

    Thanks for the input guys.
My clothes still fit nicely, if not a little looser, and it dosnt look like i'm gaining fat, so i'm betting that it is muscle gain. Even though it seems weird to be lightly bulking on a calorie deficit :\, i guess the human body can do weird things.

I'm thinking of going keto for the next month or so, does anyone here have experience with a keto diet and lifting, just a little worried about pre-post workout nutrition.
