He's only 5 still so my windows are safe for a bit yet. Once that room gets finished by end of summer (hopefully!!)) and I can move all my stuff in there, the room that currently has my stuff in it will become his 'hockey room', complete with floor painted like a rink, painted boards, two nets, goalie equipment, wire mesh over the windows, etc so he has a place to go nuts for years with his friends. I had something like that when I was a kid and want to do the same for him, we spent 100's of hours in there!

HA! Shows what I know. I assumed it was a soccer goal....I never even think about hockey down here! (*just noticed that Conky is from Canada)

Hey Conky, how is that Sole treadmill? How long have you had it/how often do you use it? Did you buy it new? cost?

Got it here (http://www.treadmillfactory.ca/?goto...d&id_prod=447#), for about that price...maybe on sale for a couple hundred more off, I really can't remember!

Honestly I haven't used it much myself, it's more for my wife. Between lifting and hockey twice a week, not much time for cardio for me. Had it just over a year and it's worked great for her. I did a LOT of research online before buying and this one seemed like it was very highly rated in terms of value for the $, very good quality for a decent price.

Once we get into winter here, I'll likely have to jump on it a bit more and see for myself.

Here's an idea of the reviews from users:

that would be cool. is he on the ice yet? my son started when he was 5, he's 11 now. i'm not sure about over there, but it's freakin' expensive for ice time here. it's worth it though, he loves it.

baseball, hockey, and golf are all he ever wants to do.

Sounds like they're cut from the same mold. He's been on the ice ever since he could stand, and it's paid off since he's way ahead of all the other kids his age. It's all he ever wants to do which is great...unfortunately, he's an only child at this point so I'm constantly getting the "dad, will you play hockey with me? will you take shots on me? will you play net?". All hockey all the time in winter, he also plays summer hockey he loves it so much!

Our local rink is about $200/hr. League registration is about $300/season which isn't bad. BUT they also have a 1/3 size warmup ice surface next to the main ice, so we rent that at $40/hr once every two weeks for some private ice time for the two of us.

And also a ton of baseball all summer, and the driving range when we get a little extra time. He wants to start going onto real courses now, I don't know where the heck we'll find the time!

And also a ton of baseball all summer, and the driving range when we get a little extra time. He wants to start going onto real courses now, I don't know where the heck we'll find the time!
i'm in the same boat, i'm always playing too. my daughter doesn't want any part of it, and my other son wants to play all the time, but he's only 2. he's gonna go on the ice asap, too. that small ice would be cool. my son would whoop me at hockey- i never played. i can skate, but not that well. on top of that, he's about 130 pounds right now and not much shorter.

not sure what our ice time is hourly, but ice time for the fall season this year is $2000 per kid with 16 kids on the team. registration is the same and includes jerseys and socks.

Considering soccer has the highest rate of injuries, I doubt it's even close to being a wussy sport.
Plus, for the rest of the world it's THE sport, and surprisingly US is one of the very few countries that hasn't embraced it.

But i know that was just sarcasm from you...

No, soccer is just a torture device, both for players and those unfortunate enough to have to watch it. (my hate for soccer is serious).

I know Atlanta has a team. We had a minor league team here in town too, until 2 years ago when they folded. I just dont think about hockey....ever.

When you count a hangnail as a injury sure the rate is high.

If you get eighteen stitches you only miss five minutes of game time they don't count it as an injury in hockey.

    1. Typical ignorant answer, really. Watch a FIFA soccer game and see how many players get hurt in one match. Rippetoe has it also in the SS who has the highest injuries in sports on page 312. Injury rate:

    Soccer:6.2
    Rugby: 1.92
    Basketball: 1.03
    Football: 0.1
Hockey isn't even on the list. Maybe because nobody plays it really.

This is data of injuries per 100 participation hours.

    2. Who really watches or plays hockey really? It's an imitation of soccer but on ice and it doesn't compare to soccer. In fact it reminds me of hillbilly Nascar that the only reason people watch it is for the crashes. Just a bit different here with the substitution of crashes with fights. Oh, so now we really got to the point of why they end up with cuts. Maybe it's due to the removing of their helmets to get into fights. Stupid, stupid sport and it's ridiculous that it's even allowed as a "part" of the sport.

eh, opinions are opinions, but i don't see how any sport can be compared to nascar. i'd equate nascar with going to the dentist before i'd say it's like a sport.

hockey is a fun sport to watch, though i was never fortunate enough to play when i was younger. the reason? it was too expensive for my mom to pay for. i'm glad i can afford for my son to play it, and hopefully will be able to pay for my youngest to play if he wants to.

TBH, I think they're both boring as hell.

I think the argument that soccer is a wussy sport is stupid though. Its a sport and anybody that can do what they do are athletes. I don't get why the whole world likes it and I really don't care, but its still a worthwhile endeavor if that's your thing......same for hockey.

But other than just the excitement of going to a major sporting event, I can think of about 100 other things I'd rather do than go to either game.

Don't even get me started about having to pay $10 for a damn beer. LOL, our Pro Hockey team charges ridiculous rates for refreshments (as does everybody) and still loses 12 million dollars a year. They are actually considering having the county buy the arena and pay for it by levying a sin tax on beer/alcohol/cigs in our area.

Aint that grand.....I could really give two poops about the Bluejackets and I'm still going to have to pay more for beer so they can pay their players and execs millions of dollars. Don't get me wrong, you all know I'm a conservative..........and I think they should be paid what the market bears.....but apparently it aint bearing it!!!! I just don't expect to pay for something I don't use or care about and that isn't a public imperative.

I like football but I don't think the city should bear the cost of their stadiums either.

maybe, but like Wildtim said, the definition of "injury" is different between various sports so that's not scientific. Soccer players get knocked down like they've been shot by phantom players...thats embarassing to even watch! Hockey players take a 100mph puck or stick in the mouth, lose 6 teeth and need dental surgery and don't miss a shift.

Nice gym Conky. It's nice you're taking a big interest in your son's interest.

I'm a football fan. Like hockey when they let them fight (yes juvenile). Like soccer but it can get boring like any sport. I respect soccer players for their endurance (lots of running) and hockey players for their strength/high pain tolerance (they can take a beating and give one).

It's THE sport for the world because it's THE cheapest to play...all you need is some dirt and something, pretty much anything, to kick around!

If hockey weren't so damn expensive, it would be much more widespread around the world. It's big in most of the developed world, ie North America and Europe. I figure if my son plays competitively in a few years, it'll run me at least $10,000 per year...yikes!!

Yes, I find the Westminster Kennel Dog Show more exciting than soccer. Nobody denies that soccer players are great athletes, of course they are, right up there near the top actually....however, they are also among the softest athletes that I've ever known. Hockey players don't get NEAR enough credit for their skill and athleticism....it's a shame so many people are stuck on the whole "toothless Canadian goons swinging sticks at each other" stereotype.

Anyway, enough of this sports talk for me...this thread kinda got sidetracked I think!!

I'd agree with basketball being a pretty cheap sport, if you are in an urban area with city courts. Being a couple miles from any pavement its pretty hard for me to play. Swimming is only cheap if you live on a lake or have a pool and if thats your situation you don't need cheap. Soccer is rreally the cheapest, find a ball and up to 20 kids in an empty lot or field and you are good to go.
