Illegal mushroom grow busted

A 9-1-1 hangup first led police to the green house on the 4500 block of NE Alberta St. where police noticed suspcious items.

Northeast Precinct officers dropped by the house at 4511 NE Alberta St. to make sure a 9-1-1 hang-up was not a real emergency. When they arrived, they noticed items that made them curious. After a little research, they had the information they needed to execute a search warrant for an illegal mushroom grow operation.

Police executed the search warrant Monday, taking the renters of the house into custody. Sgt. Stephanie Lourenco says they expected to find a few jars of mushrooms but there was much more.

"There are maybe 300 jars," she said, taking a guess. "I don't know, I'm taking a guess. We'll have to inventory and catalog everything."

Also inside: wheelbarrows full of manure, warming plates and tarps probably used to keep the space humid for growing and equipment to process and distribute the mushrooms after harvest.

Lourenco says it appears the operators recently harvested. She estimates that one gram of psilocybin mushrooms can sell for $35 on the street.
