ah yea i shoulda said that first, most important thing of all is good technique and knowing how to punch properly

also punch with your index finger knuckle and middle finger knuckle. one reason is because the last three are easier to break. i hit a locker one time and hit it wrong and broke my pinky knuckle.

this is true, turn your wrist slighly in the direction of your pinky finger which will make your index and middle finger nuckles hit your target only.

Do not punch with a 5lbs weight in your hand.
practice technique, stright punches are where you'll get the most power if done properly

Yeah, this has been posted like 500 times.
No dumbbells
what makes bench go up? benching more... so what makes throwing punches more efficient/better?
Work your abs and lats (those were my weak points anyway). Obviously, there are bodyparts more important to the process, but these two really seem to be lacking in bodybuilders to my knowledge anyway.

Working obliques is probably a good idea, too...especially if you want those powerful full reach punches...the turning action of the torso really adds power to the straightening of the arm and throws your weight into the fist.

Do lats play a big role in punching?

Learn to do proper punches, the power comes from the body, mostly the hip, and then practice with a bag.

Does shadow boxing help with that?

This is the way Bruce Lee do it: When you're punching, don't make a fist yet(leave your hand open). When the hand is about to hit the target, then make a fist very quickly and tighten it. It's said that your arm feels lighter when you don't make a fist. So make a fist when it hits the target. I should try this out.

i did martial arts and this is what they told us
1.do not form a fist while punching untill your are about to hit the target. do this in a snap motion foward
2.for max power and when you have time, start the punch from the waist, obviously if you need a quicker punch you would do a jab instead
3.exhale when you are about to hit the target, do this while clenching your fist in step 1, optionally make alot of noise to intimidate the target/throw them off
4.form a fist with your knuckles inclined, if your arm was parrel with the ground then your knuckles would be above your arm.
5.lots and lots of heavy bag work, i notice big improvements when using my heavy bag, if i dont use it for months my punches are noticbly weaker and after punching fora while my punches loose accuracy and my hand rolls over because the muscles between the wrist and hand are weak.
6.explosive exersizes like fast benching, olympic lifts.
7.cardio for fitness, you will loose accuracy/speed and power if you get tired while fighting
8.sparing is really important for fighting as well

Punching from the waste is crap and you cannot get full power that way.

No need to punch. Just poke them in the eye .

No its not and yes, you can.
It takes practice, however and if you're not willing to put out the effort to learn it then yes, I guess it would be crap. For you anyway.

I have taken a couple different martial arts that teach punching from the waste and it is complete garbage. If you want to learn to punch take kickboxing or boxing. Maybe that is why most MMA fighters learn boxing for striking and not some martial arts like you took.

What, you think boxers don't generate their punching power from their "waste?" (with the exception of jabs of course) Where do you get all of yours from?

Thats right, boxers punch from the WAIST/hip too. Nobody generates all their power from the shoulders. If so then they're not gonna hit you very hard.

I must be confused. I thought you were talking about those lame ass karate type punches that come from your waist and go straight in front of you.
