    Fixed Weight Barbells Question

This is probably a stupid question, but does a fixed weight barbell weigh as much in pounds as the number on the sides? Do you add anything for the bar? I use fixed weight barbells for some things because I think the lightest ones (20 pounds) are lighter than the olympic barbell alone, but I want to be sure.

I've always gone with the number on the side and assume that number includes the weight of the bar. If you want to be certain, jump on a scale and then jump on the scale holding the weight.

Why not just put the barbell on the scale by itself?

Because that is not nearly as fun as jumping on the scale then jumping off then jumping on again holding a fixed barbell. I guess you could always disassemble the fixed barbell and weigh the 2 ends together to see if they add up to what it says or if the weight of the bar is really included??!!#$%%>??

Ha, I think the idea is that it's hard to balance a barbell on a scale and be sure that the scale is weighing the barbell properly. Also, some scales don't register very low weights, so you could prevent that problem by holding onto the barbell to weigh it. I'd try this, but there are no scales near the fixed weight barbells at my gym.

Possibly because the diameter on the ends makes the bar too high off the ground to rest on the scale instead of the ground.

If it's a spring scale meant for weighing people, it would make sense to calibrate it for best accuracy (No spring is perfectly linear.) in the range of the weight of people.

We're talking hypothetically here, right? We'd just read the darn number of the weight.

Yes but that could be awkward for some people, although I guess if you deadlifted 1 end onto the tip of the scale you could then lever it up.
