    personally I bike, or used to, A LOT, and it's going to work different muscles depending on how you actually ride the bike, how you position your feet (yes, seriously), and if you're going uphill or what not. Riding will definitely work your calves though, but also the rest of your legs, depending on what you do as I have just stated

    That depends, when you pedal, how do your feet rest on the pedals? If they're centred, nah not much. If it's the heel touching, no way. If you only have the toe on the center of the pedal, then sure, though in general bikes don't provide huge resistance.

    It would work; it is just inefficient as hell if that is your only reason for biking.

    Doing 5 sets of calf work for 15-20 reps 4x per week would give better results and be way more time efficient.

    Bikers have some of the best figures around, except that female bikers seem to sacrifice their chests...
    But most guys who aren't on roids have trouble dieting well enough to have good upper body and lower body. Bikers have a great lower body and amazing BF, all they have to do is hit the gym twice a week for one hell of an impressive figure.

    No, that's probably because your family is a bunch of fatties.

    And muscle size, even calf size, isn't some 99% genetics garbage. It's intelligent training and a cast-iron will, and not sitting in front of a PS2 in all your damned free time.

    Cycling != large calves
    It's an endurance exercise, not a mass exercise. You will get lean, strong calves, but not "big" calves.

    Large, muscular calves is: moving heavy weight, on a schedule + genetics + diet + other work on those muscles.

    If you run 12 miles a week, you will not get big calves. In fact, I choose cycling, with the pedal under the arch of my foot, to avoid working my calves during cardio.

    Pedaling with improper foot position can lead to knee troubles (obviously, this has nothing to do with calves, but...) and having the pedal under the foot arch is improper form. Anyone considering cycling as a sport/workout should invest the time to have their bike set-up properly to their individual dimensions, either themselves if they know proper set-up, or by a reputable bike shop.
    And, yeah, I agree with others that cycling won't necessarily give you huge calves. The most mass you'll likely see gained would be in the quads, I'd imagine. I ride a lot, but I ride for fun (non competitive), off road when I can

    I'm actually speaking of my stationary recumbant bike at home... It causes no knee pain to place it there.

    The pedals are under the balls of my feet when riding a real bike, but I don't do that very often.
