Question Cottage Cheese or Casein Protein

Topic says it all. Which will be the best before I go to bed to ensure optimal gains? Haven't seen a definitive answer on this. Price not an issue.

    Cottage Cheese is casein protein.
The protein in the milk is 80% casein.

i lean towards cottage cheese more because i dont have to wake up 3 times a night to take a piss after making a shake before bed. But it all depends on goals and whether your body tolerates lactose well or not. Straight casein has less carbs, which means less cals, good for cutting, but 2-4% milkfat cottage cheese has a good amount of cals, good for bulking. Its up to you basically. Either is a good choice. Its also probably more cost effective to have a casein shake every night rather than a cup of cottage cheese...

I don't like cottage cheese, so I simply have a vanilla casein protein shake with a coupla fish oil capsules for EFAs before bed.

Real food is always going to be better than a protein powder (except before or after a workout). If you are trying to bulk, do as the others have said and grab the higher fat cottage cheese. I know it is disgusting though.

    What? Why?

I'd personally rather have CC, casein powders (that I've had, anyways) tend to be sandy/chalky, whereas CC is very palatable.

    food always over supplements.

the word supplement says it all. To supplement your diet.

as was said above cassein powders aren't all that good. Atleast I don't think so anyway.

Cottage cheese is VERY good especially when mixed with some splenda/choc whey/natty pb. mmmm delicious. I always feel like I'm cheating and want another bowl even though I'm not.

Dondarko- Can you elaborate as to why the high fat type is preferable? I've had CC in the past, but I had the fat free stuff with some flax seed. I also added in a unit of applesauce to give it some taste, only about 15 carbs. Is there something I haven't heard about the fat in CC?

No there isn't and it is highly likely that the flax seed and the non fat CC is better for you. In fact, fat from diary products isn't a particularly great fat. I recommended high fat CC to the person who was bulking, just as a more convienent way to get more calories. But if one were to be circumspect, the flax / CC combination is more healthy.

Well, the funny thing is, it was "common knowledge" that Jews, Gypsies, blacks, well... pretty much everyone but Aryan's were inferior! Can you believe that?

What I'm saying is, just because you think something is common knowledge does not make it true.

Protein powders are fine for supplements but nothing replaces a real meal made with actual food.
Powder contains carbs, fats, protein, you could dissolve some vitamins into it... sounds like a food to me.

It is likely going to be more nutritious as well.
Possibly, but if you are taking a multi vitamin and eating other sources of whole food, it quite possibly would not matter.

I recommend Cottage Cheese over Protein Powder and now I'm a Nazi? Do you compare everyone you disagree with to a Nazi? Having had a member of my family killed in the Holocaust, I find your comparison extremely offensive and a bodybuilding forum is no place to exploit the death of millions for the purposes of an insult.

The truth is if you are relying on supplements and multi-vitamins to replace real food then you are in bad shape. Absorption rates on multi-vitamins are not as high as you would like to believe. If you are still confused, seek a registered dietician immediately.

Get off your high horse, with a little reading comprehension practice, you would see I am not calling you a Nazi. I was comparing your "common knowledge" to something that was absurd trying to make a point.

To be honest, I haven't done much research on absorption rates of vitamin/mineral supplements as opposed to food sources. I would say there are too many variables to say that it would be significant. If a multivitamin and/or other vitamin/mineral supplements complimented sources from food, I'd think there wouldn't be a problem. Would you disagree?

sure the caesin from Protein in CC or shakes will be about the same, but when u take ur caesin at night add a fat source to it to make the digestion rate slower and it will stick in ur body longer.. adding whey to cc doesnt have much of an effect except more protein!

u want a long lasting digestion over night and a good way to do that is adding some fat to ur protein before bed! make sure it fits in ur macros and have some almonds on the side or add some olive/fish/flax/sunflower oil with some CC or milk or caesin shake

or do what 75% of the bodybuilding world does

    PB AND CC before bed

i myself like the 1% CC low sodium,

1 cup serving = 160 cals, 32g of protein, 6g of carbs, mix that with 1 tablespoon of PB and ur good to go as protein will be sticking u for quite some time

and i agree! i dont want to be waking up in my sleep to be taking pisses as to having a shake before i hit the sack.. its valueable we all get our rest as bodybuilders

It Should Also be noted that most sources of your average vitamins like calcium etc come from rock and some are synthetic. obviously our bodies arent meant to consume rock so therefore there is a very low absorption rate of these vitamins and minerals compared to real food. As for the synthetic ones they have been shown in studies to cause you more harm than good. So all the guys saying there is no different i think there is a massive difference in powders and real food trouble is you wont probably notice the difference on the outside of your body just the inside.

Angry please be open minded about my opinion<3

food makes your body work harder, which is what you want, taking a protein shake before bed is the last thing id reccomend, i dont care if its super duper protein magic powder, i dont give a phuck. thats ignorance.
to take a protein shake or cottage cheese before bed (which is what time i assume you eat these sense its slowly released and its the perfect time to consume besides first thing in the morning)
taking a protein shake before bed is just saying how dumb or desperate you are. hell everyone is different, but the majority of people need to know that food comes first, protein shakes are good for when your not hungry or when your out of time. THAT IS IT. their is nothing special thats in them, i promise you. they are made because they are conveinient, and make your planning easier, try to argue wth my opinion, like i said, i dont give a phuck what you think, nothing special is in a protein shake, just cause they give it a fancy name like hydro whey, casein powder, ITS THE SAME ****. its like having candy, their all different in their own way, but eating alot of them will still make you fat right? no matter what flavor or type. you BITCH <--- last sentence is for the stubborn ones.
    now, about cottage cheese
PERFECT FOR MORNINGS AND EVENINGS EVEN RIGHT BEFORE BED, any body builder will tell you that. for several reasons. its slowly released in your bloodstream, so while your their dreaming away while you sleep, its going to last you almost all night. which is perfect for preserving muscle, which is something casein does(found in cottage cheese). it also keeps you full and sense its cheese im assuming it makes you go to the restroom as well.
good luck you guys, hope you read, understood, and applied. and remember, nutrition is everything. EVERYTHING!!!!
