O/T: Have you ever watched yourself eat?
I think of myself as a polite person, and I know how to eat properly in front of other people. No one has ever complained, and I am well behaved in public. But I recently learned I am a PIG when I'm by eating by myself. I had a mirror leaned up on the table against the wall and I looked up and saw myself shoveling food into my face to the point where my cheeks were sticking out, barely chewing my food, and shoving more food in the second there was more room in my cheeks, hand over hand, food falling out, sticking my tongue out on the plate to pick it up. If someone came to my house and ate like that I would think they had never seen the outside of their barn.
Anyone have a similar experience?

I am CONSTANTLY telling my son to eat with his mouth closed.
I really hope it sinks in because he'll never get a second date, when that time comes.

If he's like me, and only pigs-out in private, it won't matter. I'm the epitome of polite eating company (around other people), so I can't blame any lack of second dates on my eating habits.

OP, with your avatar, hard to criticize your eating .....technique. Can't say I've ever had a mirror on the table; though there were times, even as an adult my dad would say 'Slow down; no one's going to take it away from you.'.

My daughter sounds like a pig when she eats... She always asks why I dont eat dinner with them... I say because you sound like a pig...
When I do eat with them, I always have to say something to her... Then I usually just get up and leave the room.

I was recently told off by my three year old son for "smacking my lips" while eating when it was just me and him at the table. He's told me off several times now. So I've learned my manners are not as good when no other adults are around. So now I have to watch it!

You ain't learning him right.
When my sons and I are eating without the wife and daughter around, we get to drink our milk from the cereal bowl instead of spooning into our mouths for 5 minutes, one spoonful at a time.
My wife is so annoyed with that, I love doing it when she isnt around.

Nope its when we are out to dinner as well.
On the dating thing whatever you do, don't take any advice from me odds will even get lower. Thats why I stay married. It's too hard to even find the first date.

By "in private" I mean it's only OK to do if it's not in front of anyone, including his Dad. If I ate that way in front of mine, he'd give me a look so hard that I'd lose my appetite for the rest of the week.

You guys make me feel much better. My wife and daughter act surprised on a regular basis on how I eat. My wife keeps asking how that mess happened, and to be honest I really don't know! I tell her it's magic or demons cause there's no way I could have done that.
Today I was surprised because I had to go through the kitchen to the garage and there's a bunch of protein milk shake in the middle of the kitchen floor, I have no idea how it would have got there unless it flew over my shoulders when I poured it into a glass.
Believe it or not my Mom brought us up like Amy Vanderbilt would have, my wife cannot believe it.

My kid is the same way, and no matter what he eats, he is going to get it all over his clothes. When he comes home from school he is clean so I suspect he's got a different eating routine in school.

Good observations. I'm sure I'm guilty of breaking many eating rules.
But screw it, got to keep the mass up somehow.

This is a very funny thread. I tend to eat slowly and quietly so, consequently, I can't help but notice other's bad manners at the table. A coworker of mine eats his lunch at his desk and I get to hear him chewing with his mouth open every day. Yuck. My partner, meanwhile, somehow manages to wear whatever he eats but pleads "I don't know how that happen." Yeah, gremlins did it.

I eat very slowly. I also have very decent manners (even when eating alone). I CAN NOT STAND people with poor table manners. It makes me want to repeatedly beat them over the head w/ their dinner plate.
Seriously, poor manners totally ruin my meal. Chewing w/ their mouths open, licking their fingers loudly, licking their knife, never looking up to engage in dinner conversation, wiping their plate w/ bread until not even a crumb or drop of liquid remains on the plate, getting as much as they possibly can on their dinner fork (so they can shovel it into their mouths), etc. F That.

With the price of food now I know I need to eat slowly, savor every bite, don't use napkins; lick fingers or anything and get in that cereal bowl with the tongue like a dog licking the dogfood bowl til the only taste left is plastic.
Should REALLY improve my eating habits!
