Eating Clean On The Go
Hello Everyone! I am new to Bodybuilding.com and am very excited to start chatting with others who are interested in competing and/or weight lifting. I wanted to know the best way to carry around and consume whey protein when at work or at the gym. In a shaker, tupperware container, etc. ? Please share some of your insights.
Thanks,
Lauren

hey Lauren - and welcome.
i take my protein powder to work with me and then just mix it with a spoon in a plastic cup i keep there. sometimes i also just mix the powder in with my oats. i don't take it to the gym with me - i just eat before and then within 45 minutes after (at home).

Shaker bottles are good for carrying around your whey, but can get a bit bulky. I use a plastic baggie and put my protein in there, and scoop it out throughout the day as needed - same goes for my oats.

I put my whey in little baggies, then add it to a shaker w/ water after my workout. Works out great!

I use MRP's (Meal Replacement Powders) that come in a packet and just mix them with water in a shaker. Depending on my caloric requirements at the time, I either use Lean Mass Complex or Naturally Lean Complex. Whey alone is not a meal and won't satiate you for long.

ChplHillGymGirl-
Have to give you props on your pic here! Great work on the midsection!
I use a few different methods: to work I keep a large baggy with about a lb. of powder in it and a shaker, I usually take a thermos (hehe, an old kiddy lunch box thermos with cartoon characters on it) with milk in it or get milk at the cafeteria since I work at a school.
At the gym I just throw my powder in the shaker and add water when I'm ready to drink it.
For road trips, my bf and I both work out and try to eat right so we pack an ice chest with milk, water bottles and the rest of our healty snacks.

Good job on keeping your focus on eating healthy. It is hard sometimes to eat on the go. Like many others, I have my whey protein in a baggy, but I also bring along some activia yogurt, string cheese, granola bars (the actual healthy kind), and since I work at a mall I pick up Subway everyday. Something like a chicken breast sub on wheat is a great way to fill you up and help reach your protein amounts for the day. Just try and have a satisfying breakfast in the morning and that ought to help!!! Also, Vitamin Water is a great alt. to just plain water.
Good luck!!!

Hello ladies....sorry about just now replying to your helpful responses.
A few questions:
1. Do most of you scoop whey powder into snack sized ziploc bags? And if so, is it easy to transfer the powder from the bag into a cup?
2. What type of shaker bootle do you use? I have looked everywhere for the perfect container and cannot seem to find it.
3. Any thoughts on egg powder over whey?
Thanks so much for the input! And check out my latest journal:

I actually use tupperware when I take mine somewhere..... I have these little containers that are .5 cup and I'll put anywhere from 1/2 scoop to a full one. Usually I end up mixing it with my coffee or something (protein coffee- that's protein and caffeine! I invented something great! lol).
As for egg vs. whey.... I started out trying egg, and it made me bloat terrible for some reason.... Unfortunately, whey just makes me have gas. :/

Wow, I like the fit & fresh site. The cutting board with scale seems pretty neat. But who measures carrots??
And protein coffee...I will have to try that. I have doen so many things with protein lately, pancakes, pudding, regular drinks, pouring it on oatmeal, using it as a dip for a PB sandwich, etc.

Whey protein
I know how great whey protein is supposed to be for you, but I have two qualms with it:
1. Its expensive (I'm a student.. I need cheap protein from real food)
2. It makes me bloat and feel sick to my stomach with gas.
Can I get a similar effect by eating eggs, tuna, or cottage cheese after a workout?

Protein does "seem" expensive but, when you break it down and actually see how much protein you're getting per serving....it's a very cost effective approach to getting your protein.
Just for example:
Vitol 100% Egg Protein is $23.00 at Lucky Vitamin and, here in Las Vegas I pay $5.99 per carton of 18eggs.
If I were to eat only egg whites in place of my protein....I would be paying $102.00 to equal what I get from my supplement.
If Whey protein is making you sick, you may want to try a "100% Whey Protein Isolate" or "100% Egg Protein"
Yes, noone needs a protein supplement if they're getting enough nutrition from solid food. Just following my workouts I have a full meal (like lunch or dinner).

Because I'm lactose intolerant, I've had to try a lot of different proteins before finding one that really worked for me. Many of the egg and soy proteins have so much added crap to them that it made me feel like I was chugging down pancake batter. *disgusting*
100% Egg Protein By Vitol is All Natural and has no thickening agents or sweeteners. It's really great for blending into juice, smoothies, and even adding to oatmeal.

I said "I do"

I agree that whey and egg supplements are quite cost effective in the long run, not to mention convenient. Besides, how much truly clean food is on your college campus? I know in my cafeteria, for example, the cottage cheese, lunch meats, and baked chicken is full of sodium! Yuck! So I just get all my food from the local grocery store. But I will admit that the cafeteria is an awesome place to get a cheat meal! haha.
Is eating clean a convenience issue for you at college? If so, how have you dealt with that so far?

I just started back in Jan since having my son. I'm spoiled by the Trader Joe's down the street from my college...I grab a salad from there for 2.99$...it's so filling and full of 40g protien..I usually get the chicken salad...some of the other salads have a bit too many carbs like 30grams...but I grab one of these after class and on my way to the gym. I also eat protein bars too...it's not effected my weight loss so I dont see why not. As long as I eat them under my caloric need it;s been fine.
Best Clean on the Go foods for me
Low-Sodium Lunch Meat (Deli only...hate packaged yuk!)
Non-Fat Cottage Cheese
Low fat Low carb salads from Albertsons, Vons, Staterbro's etc
Salad's from Trader Joe's
Protien bars
Pre made protein shakes...I love Muscle Milk! Or EAS!
I KNOW what you mean about on the go! My weight loss has totally picked up since being in school...it's been great! I just gotta make sure it's not muscle loss...not that I have very much yet any ways! haha working on it!

What type of protein bars do you like the best? I am a huge fan of Builder's protein bars made by Clif. They are so good! Usually I will have on mid-day as a meal replacement during the off season. It has 20g protein, 30g carbs, and 8g of fat. Pretty well balanced!!

my on the run. I'm a biochemistry major with 17 credits right now, who works as a video editor 45 hours a week too. I'm on the run alot.
Starbucks southwest chipotle turkey sandwiches. worst option, but best tasting, 510 cal, 32 g protein.
Muscle juice 2455 shakes.
Large can tuna (75+grams protein, ~450cal) with tabasco.
ISS Research MRP (when out of muscle juice) buy the 60 pack from bb.com.
homemade oatmeal shake (with whey).
MILK.
Cottage Doubles. (or, I've moved on to just cottage cheese straight from the half gallon jug with fruit mixed in, my favorite).
Met-RX collosal bars.
Banana, slather peanut butter on that bitch. (yes I have two jars of almond butter in my car right now from trader joes. Almond butter/pb all the same IMO...)
Once a week i make a sweet potatoe cassarole with crushed almonds and walnuts on top instead of marshmallow, I carry 100g this around a few days a week for carbs in a gladware container.
Homemade tiramisu is my rest day delight, otherwise thats 80% of my diet, rest comes from the crock pot slow cooker in my apartment, I make chili, sweet and sour chicken, chicken parmesan, rosemary and cranberry whole turkey, roast beef, my specially formulated cranberry sauce meatballs, etc...

Ladies...for those who love protein shakes. I suggest to buy the Magic Bullet. It is a portable blender. Take it to work, if you can get some ice, water, protein powder, and an outlet...voila...you got yourself a smoothie protein shake.

You can buy a shake bottle from this site. It's only $2 and it does its job. I have 2.
I carry protein powder in a ziploc bag also and then get milk at school or add water.
I also carry protein bars/granola bars for emergencies.

1. When I carry my whey powder in a ziplock I usually drink a little out of a water bottle, then cut off the corner of the baggie and add it to the water (like using a funnel) then just shake it up. Pouring it out of the baggie has not worked at all for me.
2. As for a shaker bottle, I found mine at GNC. It is nothing pretty, but it gets the job done.

1) The MRP's I use come in packets for easy use while on the go.
2) Any shaker will do. These are fine http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/shaker.html
3) It depends on why. You can also get blends of whey, casein, milk, egg, etc.

I went to Babies R Us and bought a four serving formula container with a flip top spout top. It is a cylinder container with four divided sections. Each holds one scoop of powder. Then before I leave the gym I fill my water bottle to 10 oz and put the water and the powder in a "BB.com shaker bottle". You get one free when you spend I think $75. I drink a shake as soon as I get to the locker room.

2. As for a shaker bottle, I found mine at GNC. It is nothing pretty, but it gets the job done.

Do you carry scissors around to cut off the corner of the bag? (this is a serious Q)
I have a shaker bottle from GNC as well, I agree not the prettiest thing I've ever seen. I want to find something that works and fits in my coach purse! haha.

I like the idea of a magic bullet for the home, but I don't see myself bringing it anywhere, too much of a hassle for me.
Oh, I mixed two scoops of protein power with 1 Tblsp. of peanut butter, and a little bit of water, put it in the freezer for about 1 and a half hours and boom! "Ice cream" Has anyone ever tried this?
