NPC rules
Quick question guys and gals,
I competed last year in my first contest as an open bantam. I placed 2nd, but only out of two competitors. I don't know if it was deserving of me to get the 2nd place trophy.
id like to compete in '08 as a novice, and go up against more guys, but im thinking its against the rules to go backwards?
why would i want to go backwards? id rather not repeat another year of winning something by default. also- i think my body needs more time to grow and mature to compete with the open guys again.
any thoughts or experience? did i screw myself?

I would say not to go novice. Judging by your pics you deserved at least what you got. You're thinking too much. Bite the bullet and stay open, win the class then win the show.

found this to be interesting...
Novice 1 : A division for first time competitors who have never competed before. To compete in this division you must be going on stage for your first time.
Novice 2 : A division for competitors who have competed before but have never taken first place in a show where there were three people or less competing in their division.
Open Division : Is open to anyone regardless of what levels of competitions they have won in the past.

If you have received a trophy (1-5) in the open division you can not go back to the novice/junior division.

Will -you sure about that one? Many people I know have entered NJ NPC shows in both the open and novice class several times and placed. My understanding was the only "rule" was someone winning a novice OVERALL is no longer eligible for novice shows. I checked the NPC website but nothing on it. My experience here in nj/pa, is many people crossover in the same show so the novice is usually as competitive, if not more so, than the open

hmm
well, thanks for all the advice everyone!
well the local NPC coordinator here in Honolulu just returned my phone call, and according to him, only a first placing in the open would prevent me from competing in the novice, and likewise a first place in the novice division would prevent me from competing again in the novice division.
i wonder if it depends per show?

Chuck, that is my understanding as well - if you haven't won an Overall you can compete as a Novice. My friend Phil did both at the Gold's.
thaibodybuilder, my advice is to do both Novice and Open if it is a NQ, and just Open if it's not.
