I am pretty big on goal setting and have been most of my life.
I especially like setting short term attainable goals every 3 months or so and find that its helpful for me to operate on that sort of timespan.
Ive got my goals for the first 3-4 months of 08' on my siggy and also plan on losing 10-15lbs plus also in addition to doing that.
(from my weight on January 1st)
As far as goals for the entire year I would love to finish the year:
in the 250s or even less if possible weight-wise, keep progressing consistently on DLs, and make my squatting poundages reach somewhere in the mid 300s for working sets.
Do you have any personal goals for the new year ?

Start squatting seriously again and finally squat 350(old PR was 270, I squatted that about a month ago just to make sure I hadn't lost too much)

How much does cutting weight play a part in PLing at decently high levels?
I would think at the highest levels of competition a 181lber competition-wise would walk around at like 190-195lbs...not that that would necessarily mean you should or shouldnt move up, im basically just curious as to how most guys approach it bc I knew Matt Croc in one journal entry of his was talking about dropping 20lb in the 2-3 days leading up to the meet.

Well, there are feds with 24 hour weigh ins and that is a whooole different story from having to weigh in two hours before you lift.
Cutting weight can definitely make or break you, whether or not an indivudual athlete would choose to drop weight is dependent on a bunch of specific, individual factors.http://youtube.com/user/Kiknskreem

Im not sure if this was for me or the other poster....
Im probably way up from my low earlier this month of 293.8....im guessing like 299-300lbs but im going to hold off on weighing myself until monday after my workout to kind of dull the shock. Ill be doing some cardio today and probably on sunday but nothing too big.
Had a bad month weightloss-wise due to alot of reasons...but im also holding alot of water and that will probably come off in the first week or 2 of getting back to harder workouts/more consistent diet next week. From there itll hopfully just be my usual 1 lb of loss a week which is fairly painless for me once I get back to eating normally.
Id guessing anywhere from 26.5-29% bodyfat-wise.
Any way you cut it im about 50lbs over my optimal weight...

hmmm I really set my goals by the week. I do a lift and then can't wait until next week to add another 5 lbs. But....if I had to set a goal for the year...I wanna look good @205......If i can make that happen strength should fall right in place. I'd guestimate that if I could make it to 205 my lifts would be
360 Bench
450 Squat
550 Deadlift
damn I didn't have any intentions of setting goals for the year but now that I made the statement I guess I'll try and live up to it lol

main goals:
Snatch 210lbs
Clean and Jerk 260lbs
Front Squat 315lbs
Back Squat 365lbs-385lbs
Deadlift 475lbs-505lbs
other goals that'd be cool if I got
Bench Press 275lbs
Standing Military Press 210lbs
Pullups - bw+100lbs for reps
Chinups - bw+135lbs for reps
Hammer Chins - bw+80lbs for reps
Muscle Ups - bw for reps
Close the #2.5 and #3
Box Jump 40"
Jump Rope continuously for 20 minutes
it'd be really cool if I could do these as an 87kg (191lbs) lifter, I'm probably at 94kg (206lbs) nowLast edited by GoJu; 12-28-2007 at 03:26 PM.

Weight 215 right now...230 by next year
Approx. Maxes at the moment:
Bench - 370 (possibly 10-15lbs. more, but putting 370 to be safe)
Deads - 520-530 (possibly 10-15lbs. more)
14" Box Squats - 475 (possibly 10-15lbs. more)
I know there's a lot of "maybes" on my maxes right now, but I haven't gone for a "TRUE" max in a little while, just been taking small jumps as I go up in weight throughout my workouts. (Example, if I wanted to go for a "true" max dead...I would probably go 405, 495, 550...but I've been going 405, 455, 485, 505, 520..all after warmups of course.)
Goals:
Bench 410-415
Deads - 600
14" Box - 510-515DIABLO BARBELL
1003, 540, 800 Multiply

My '08 goals are:
315 bench (245)
455 squat (365x2atg now)
525-550 deadlift (475 now)
275 powerclean+jerk (205 8x1 now)
Cut from 16-18% to 11-13%. I'd like to stay 205-220lb though.
Besides that, it's almost been 10 months since I started lifting =) I followed through on last years goal of starting to lift, so I think this won't be too bad.

Well I'm not really a powerlifter, but I do pay attention to numbers in the big 3 (although don't do much BB bench pressing). My strength goals for the new year - well for the start of the new year, hopefully it won't take me 12 months to reach them:
Deadlift 250kg (550 lbs) - it's the "quarter tonne" goal
Squat 220kg (484 lbs) - 5 plates
Bench 180kg (396 lbs) - 4 plates - left RC allowing - this one will be the most challenging
All lifts raw (belt only). Oh and sub-10% bodyfat as a last goal.

Bench - 145 lbs
Squat - 205 lbs
Deadlift - 275 lbs
I hope it happens, but I want to get down to 130 lbs so that's a 20 lbs weight loss... I don't think that's going to stop me anyway !!!Government is for slaves

Gains are coming very slowly these days. I'd love to hit 450-475 on the squat, 365+ on the bench and 550+ on deadlift. 1400 lb total at least.
I really would like to improve my squat this year, it's always been low and I'm always thinking improvement is just around the corner. Thing is, I can focus on squats only and not even do deadlift, and I'll gain 10 lbs on my squat and 30 on deadlift lol.

Make it 1551 (elite raw). I know we had this discussion before and that you do not feel that is Elite but it is and that is a good raw total regardless of age.
Goals 2008:
Make up for miserable showing in USPF Nationals this year.
May 3: Win 220lb open class USPF San Diego/Military Open with 1700 total
(single ply)
Jun 29: Win Master's class (45-50) and be competitive in open class USPF
Nationals in Warwick RI with 1750 total. Qualify for the WPF Worlds Wien
Austria
Nov 16: Win Masters class with 1800 total @Worlds
Other goals for 2008: DL 3X BW. Set record for 220 45-50 USPF BP. Keep BF b/w 10-15% (most anabolic) and cut alcohol consumption in half. Would also like to total 1551@220 raw but tough for me to hind raw meets in SOCAL plus fit in my plan. Good luck Arlecchino
