    Question Fighters with chicken legs

Is it me or are there a lot of them? What's up with that? Do they just neglect their legs, or is the upper body more important for them? Cause every fighter has a good upper body, but a lot have ****ty legs.

For a vast majority of them heavy weight training is not apart of there workout routine. And yes, most do neglect their legs. But when they tie up with a fighter well versed in any type wrestling discipline and strong legs they pay for neglecting their legs
    IT SHALL BE DONE!!!!

Well, with weight classes, its probably better to have 10 more lbs of muscle up top, rather than in your legs.

    That's what I'm saying....

That and (speaking for myself), I have poor genetics for legs. They are strong, but they are just VERY lean.
BUT, now, I don't mind it because I generally roll with a guy who is 260 and most of the guys have a hard time keeping him in gaurd - if I had big legs, I would have issues with it too....but I don't

most martial artists have fairly strong legs I think, mine are stronger than many of the long term lifters at the gym, I'm guessing from years of stances, foot work traning and kicks. I dont think having a lot of muscle mass would be that helpful especially if your trying to hold guard or pull a rubber guard

a lot of people with huge muscular legs don't even quick, they just use the extra leg muscles for their punch. the leaner legs are faster and more powerful because of the speed and being limber is great for the ground game.

depends on what fighters you talking about?

Boxers are the ones with some chicken twig legs and big upperbodies as far as I know.

MMA fighters tend to be more muscular and have thicker legs.

I know many wrestlers have strong legs as well and kick boxers.

also some people who are skinny and can crack is because they have Dense bones like andersone silva.

guys with lighter bones aint gonna crack as hard.

I don't know about that. Mass X acceleration = force. If you have more mass behind something, you create more force. Think of your leg as a pendulum. You want more mass towards the bottom. I bet if you took two people with legs of the same length, only one has big quads and the other has big calves, the guy with the big calves would ultimately hit harder. I could be completely wrong, but that would be my guess.

For the record, I have chicken legs. Not by choice, but it seems no matter how much I work out my legs, my calves and ankle area seem to stay very small. I can almost fit my hand around the area just above my ankle.

    a) who cares, you don't win a fight with big legs. They will most likely hinder your flexibility and mobility.
    b) heavy leg training is way to taxing. You can't improve you kicking technique if your legs are still sore and weak from heavy squatting 2 days ago.

this seems kinda true look at manny pacquiao his calves are bigger then many bodybuilders, and he is known as one of the hardest hitting little guys in boxing.

here is an excerpt from his transcript conference call.

Question: Manny, where did you get those calves and how much of a deal do they make with your punching power because the other day you looked like you were just killing the mitts.

MANNY PACQUIAO: My calves are naturally like that. It?s a very difficult thing to develop the calves and that?s where my power comes from. They are God?s gift to me and I was born that way.

big legs arent a neccesity in mma.. this is because huge legs have spaces between them when you throw up a triangle or whatever. It also holds a ton of mass which increases your weight class meaning u gotta fight bigger dudes... it also takes a ton of time and energy to build big strong ass legs... not saying to neglect them my god.. but you dont need the bodybuilding x shape.

Word. Triangles are almost impossible for me because of my thighs, especially when I am rolling with bigger guys.

Fighters would rather the majority of their weight at their upper body, if fighters filled out their legs it would be harder to cut weight.

Also in my personal experience its hard to build up legs, with the intense kick boxing, cardio, and wrestling, your legs are constantly being used, so you cannot build them up as if you were bodybuilding.

I dont fight professionally, but I train now exclusively in MMA and once in a while I lift weights.. and over the last 6 months my body has changed and its like all my muscle and definition went to my upper body, and my legs became dwarfed. I suppose this is the same thing for fighters

But, I'm guessin...could be leg days are too rough (lol).

It's a bitch to train when your legs have some major DOMS in them.

Yeah that's the complaint my brother makes. So I basically have him just emphasize squats and leg press. Hit those hard since that's only 6 hard sets. And then leg extensions and leg curls he doesn't have to hit hard, just to get a pump if he wants.
