    Best Time For Coconut Oil

Hi Guys. I want to start incorporating virgin coconut oil into my diet. My meals later in the day tend to be higher in fat, as carbs are tapered off, usually at around 4pm, 7pm and a small meal before bed. My question is: is there any 'ideal' time or preferred time for the coconut oil? I know it has the same cals as what I would normally use (olive oil or flax oil) but perhaps the way it is structured and all the saturated fat would make it a better choice at one particular time over another?

    Cheers,
    X

Probably earlier in the day. I think before bed is pointless. Coconut oil is supposed to help give your metabolism a boost. Something about it not needing to be digested and your body starts using it as energy right away.

Just make sure to take it with a good amount of food. On an empty stomach or too little could make you nauseaus and want to throw it up. The second meal after breakfast would probably be a good time. Just mixing it with a protein shake wouldn't be a good idea. It wouldn't mix well anyway, it starts getting solid the second it gets cold. I just eat it off a spoon before eating chicken or oatmeal or something.

Hi There. I don't follow the "don't mix carbs and fat" method religiously but tend to have higher fat meals with my lower carb meals later in the day. These meals are at 4pm (at work), 7pm (dinner) and before bed. I would thus not mix the coconut oil with something like oats

I was thinking - I train 3x a week, early in the morning. Would it perhaps be useful to have the coconut oil the night before training days to boost energy levels in the morning? Or should I stick to having it earlier in the day, ie. 4pm meal.

    Cheers,

i think you should use if for cooking rather then veg oils, don't directly intake it...

reason being its a medium chain triglyceride thats saturated so your body "should" burn it more like a carb rather then use if for direct fat storage, however it still is ultra calorie dense, also cooking with unsaturated fats, recent beliefs are that they may change conformations into the dreaded trans-fat...saturated fats are much more stable and cannot change because they have no double bonds...

how much is really true no clue? just some food for thought, anyone have any studies on this kinda stuff???

I take mine first thing in the morning, right before I workout. I don't eat any carbs before my workout, so my muscles need some from of energy. Coconut oil is, IMO, a better from of energy over carbs.

That's like asking if you drink coffee before bed would you wake up in the morning with an energy boost..

If you usually eat fat before bed anyway without a problem then coconut oil won't be any different.

I've been using MCT oil for over a year now and basically take 15ml every 2nd meal; about 55% of my total Fats. Don't forget I believe I read somewhere that Coconut oil is 50% MCT which is still good.

Thanks for the info guys. One last question I had: does anyone have coconut in between meals or have a little bit with each meal (ie. spread out through the day instead of in a single sitting)?

Normally I have a few almonds with each meal. Was thinking of perhaps alternating between almonds and coconut oil. Like a small teaspoon with 2-3 meals.

    Healthfood store. Or online.

Just make sure it's Virgin or Extra virgin and preferably in a glass jar.
